Rotary Board Meeting November 22, 2021

Present: Bob F, Bob W, Phil, Hubert, Kim, Ann, Chris, Catti, John, Steve, Paul.

  1. Treasurer report: Club $19,884.69 and Foundation $13,869.95. Still some money owed on the auction and dues. The club still owes $4,000 to the Cancer center.
  2. Election of officers: Catti was elected Secretary to be effective 1/1/2022. She and Phil will work together to make a smooth transition. John has agreed to stay on as Treasurer. Adam is President-Elect. A new position was created for Media and Programs, Chris will occupy that position effective 7/1/2022. 
  3. Motion by Bob and second by Catti to continue the ditch walk for the State. Papers have been sent in, there is no fee.
  4. Firemen Dinner will be December 6 at 6:00 pm at the Fire Station. There will be no noon meeting that day. Chris has arranged the menu and will bring the dinner. He is planning for no more than 40 people including 25-35 firemen. Let Phil know if you will attend this meeting.
  5. April 22, 2022 we have reserved the Winery for our 100 year celebration. Dinner will be catered by Lidderdale, Catti will contact them. Wine will be provided by the Winery at individual cost. We discussed invitations to former members and the public. No decision made.
  6. Recruiting was discussed. The idea of sending selected individuals by Rotarians was discussed. No decision made as Deb, the membership chair was not present.
  7. Results of the auction was not discussed, Deb isn’t here.
  8. The Baumgaars Christmas children gift event will be December 4. We voted to give $300 to this event. Kids will need Rotarians to help them, plan to be at Baumgaars by 6:30-6:45 that morning. We need to be out of the store by 8:00 am.
  9. We will have a free will offering tip to our servers at Family Table—Sarah and Lacy. We want to give them this on December 20. Give me your tip.
  10. There will be no meeting December 13, we will meet that Thursday (12/16) at the Carroll Brewery.
  11. Mark Beardmore will be our speaker on November 29. He will talk about his mayoral plans.

Rotary Board Meeting November 1, 2021

Present: Bob, Phil, Catti, Deb, Dave, Tom, Hubert, Ann, John, Ron, Adam, 

  1. Treasurer report Club Account $19,394.69 Foundation Account $9,979.55. This does not include auction monies.
  2. Deb discussed the results of the auction. Deb and Chris were on the radio from 10-12 on Saturday 10/30; Phil and Catti on computers; Hubert, Bob and Aaron on phones. Deb’s observation is that 1) we need to plan sooner, today is not too soon. 2) we need to have more people involved, she suggested at least 2 chairpersons and 2 committees and divide the work up. Deb wants to talk to Jefferson Rotary about what they do, then start our planning for 2022. NOTE: Tom contacted Lidderdale stores and they will provide a 25 person meal every year. Unfortunately we did not have that on our auction (probably my mistake).
  3. 100 year celebration was discussed. Date we determined after discussion April 22, 2022. Location—Carroll Winery, catered meal from Lidderdale. We should invite Rotarians and spouse, former Rotarians, and other guests to be determined. Our invitation should include an RSVP. We should have dinner music—a pianist or All Strings Attached. Phil will talk to John Guinan about reserving the space. We should attempt to invite Mary Baumhover. No other action determined.
  4. A booklet is going to be produced based on our 100 years and the article by Mary Baumhover that appeared in CDTH on last Friday. The booklet will be offered to the club members, cost not yet determined. The club will invite Mary as a speaker and we should give her some recognition. No discussion about what or how much.
  5. Succession planning for the positions of Secretary, Treasurer and Program chair was discussed. Adam suggested a term of about 6 years for those positions would provide continuity while recognizing that no one (in their right mind) wants to do those jobs indefinitely. Catti agreed to succeed Phil as club secretary. There will be an indefinite transition period. 
  6. We need to work on recruiting new members. No action taken.

Board meeting July 26, 2021

Present: Bob, Aaron, Ann, Chris V, Chris P, Eric, Dave, Ron, Hubert, Phil

  1. We received a request from New Opportunities for school supplies. We have done $300 in past years. Motion by Bob, second by Chris to approve $300. All vote yes.
  2. Amber Burger took over Randy’s hair cutting salon. She is working with Harley Davidson to provide a haircut and school supplies for children. She is asking for a total of $200 from her sponsors. Motion by Ann second by Aaron to give $100. All vote yes.
  3. Bob requests $75 to pay a team’s entry into the hospice tournament on August 8. Motion by Chris, second by Steve to approve. All vote yes.
  4. Motion by Bob scond by Chris to approve paying for the ad in the paper’s Progress Edition. All vote yes.
  5. Future programs: August 9 the RYLA students Ayak Dut and Sophia Polking will make an update of their experience; August 23 Jeremy Puck; September 13 Mike Steenhoek Soy Transportation Coalition head; September 29 Ron Cox with the ISU Industrial Research. We want to have two speakers per month.

Rotary Board meeting with the DG July 12, 2021

Present: Bob, Adam, John, Phil, Deb

 

  1. Alka Khanolkar, the 2021-22 District Governor for our district led a discussion of several questions she had about our club and what we are doing. She congratulated us that we have maintained our meetings during this past year and that we had some zoom meetings also.
  2. She asked us our goals: membership and the auction. We also want to engage members in activities so that they will be more involved with our club. Hospice softball tournament as an example.
  3. Long discussion about membership which is  a goal of the RI leader. She suggested we contact Dave Cook about his ideas. She suggested we form clubs within the club, members interested in teaching or veterans or cycling, golfing etc; as a way to engage others.
  4. She suggested we do a survey of new members to find out how to engage them. She suggested we meet one on one with all members to discuss ways they would like to get more involved. As an example one Rotarian used the game of Chess to engage young members.
  5. She asked about how the board worked. We meet monthly and send out a report each month. 
  6. She asked about the projects we were working on. Asked us if we participated in Global Grants? (we haven’t).
  7. She asked about our involvement with the Foundation. With youth Rotaract clubs.
  8. She made a presentation to the club and met with all members, 12 members were present.

Rotary Board Meeting

1. Motion by Adam, second by Dave to approve $2550 gift to New Hope for a third station at their Bargain Shoppe. The Shoppe averages 225 customers a day and has only three checkout lines. Sometimes those lines have 10 waiting customers. Our gift will allow them to open a third line. All present approved.

2. On July 12 the DG will visit. Her name is Alka Khanolkar. She will meet with Adam and Chris at 10 am for a tour of Carroll and at 11 at Family Table for a discussion with the board (all members are welcome to consider themselves board members). She will meet with the club for lunch and her presentation at noon.

3. On July 19 we will have the annual club/spouse picnic. Chris will talk to Swan Lake about getting a spot. We will have pizza and chicken from the Country Stores. You must bring your own drink. We will meet at 5 pm. No noon meeting that day.

4. Future programs. I am anxious to hear from members about programs they can put on; topic can be a hobby, their business, or something interesting they visited. In addition, Adam will contact DOT, Scranton Mfg, Puck Implement; Hubert will contact the ISU president, and Phil will contact the high school AD's about programs after July. Let Phil know if you have a program or want to line one up.

 Rotary Board Meeting June 14, 2021

Present: Bob, Phil, Hubert, John, Deb, Ann, Joel, Adam

  1. RYLA. We have two students Sophia Polking from Carroll public and Dut Ayak from Kuemper. They are registered and John has paid our fee of $350/student. RYLA takes place at Coe College in Cedar Rapids 7/18-23. They are in need of 2 Rotarians to assist, if you are interested contact me.
  2. The Alzheimers Association has requested a donation of $500. Motion by Adam to give $150 for their golf outing on July 4 and $350 for the Alzheimers Walk held in September. They also have a bike ride on June 21, contact me or Jim Feauto (830-6490) if you want to ride.
  3. The DG will visit our club July 12. She is Alka Khanolkar. She will meet with Adam and Chris at 10:00 am for a tour of Carroll and at 11:00 with the board at Family Table. She will make a presentation that day.
  4. Stove Team from Portland has been building stove’s that are used in Central America. The stoves use less fuel and produce less smoke (kitchen smoke in Central America is a big health issue). Phil will contact them to set up a time for a video presentation.
  5. Phil has created a letter which can be used to contact those who have given us auction items in the past. He will send a copy of the letter to all Rotarians and ask that they send the letter and make a personal contact by July 15. We hope that this will get us going on the auction and have the items well prior to October 30th the date of the auction. The auction will use the internet this year and eliminate use of phone in bids. We will still be on air for two hours 10 am to noon that day.
  6. Treasurer report: Club account $19,713.06 and Foundation account $9,267.54. We still owe $2000 to Cancer Center for this year (which will bring us to $6000 of the $10000 pledged).

Board meeting May 3, 2021

Present: Hubert, Bob W., Bob F., John, Steve, Chris, Phil

  1. We have had a couple of individuals express interest in joining Rotary. We have not done any membership drives since last year, maybe it is now time. A suggestion was made to have members identify 3-5 new recruits, send them a letter with a followup phone call. Any other suggestions?
  2. RYLA we have 2 applicants Sophia Polking (CHS) and Ayak Dut (Kuemper) motion by Bob and second by Huber to approve, all vote yes. The cost is $450 each. That was also approved. Phil will send in names to RYLA.
  3. I have a list of vendors who contributed to our auction the last two years. We want to send them a courtesy follow up so they will help us again this fall. I do not have addresses. Can you notify me of their address and I will compose a letter.
  4. We discussed the auction. Steve had some good suggestions about how his club auctioned off quilts by using the internet. They made over $13,000 and had expenses of $160 with very little effort on their part. We need to look into using the internet with out auction to make it more profitable and more fun. Look for a meeting in early August to discuss the auction.
  5. We approved the winners of our scholarship: (CHS) Liz Wiltse $500, William Meiners $250, Chloe Gallego $250; (Kuemper) Carter and Kenna Soppe $350, John Mayhall $250, Kari Daniel $250, and Makenna Hoffman. We approve based on RYLA ($1000), connection to Rotary ($350-$500), all others ($250) with maximum $2000 to each school.
  6. Approved $500 for Boy Scouts, motion by Bob, second Hubert all vote yes.
  7. Bob will do the Kuemper awards night is April 28; Adam will do the CHS award night on May 12.

Scholarship awards Board Meeting April 12, 2021

We have awarded scholarships to:

Carter Soppe $350; Kenna Soppe $350; John Mayhall $250; Kara Daniel $250; Makenna Hoffman $250

Our guide for the amount is:

1. We award up to $2000 per school (KHS/CHS)

2. RYLA students get $1000.

3. Students with ties to Rotary get $350 to $500

4. All applicants (up to the $2000 limit) get $250.

This year we were able to award all applicants.

 Scanning example March 17, 2021

In my spare time (when not out riding my bike) I've been doing some scanning of our documents accumulated over the years by Bob and others. Some of it is of little interest, some a lot. I have attached a cogwheel from 1994 which includes pictures of the Rotarians. 

 You will see some old friends, former Rotarians and a few current Rotarians.

March 8, 2021 Rotary Board meeting

Present: Bob W, Bob, Phil, Deb, Hubert, Aaron, Chris

  1. Treasurer report: $8570.34 in Foundation account and $16870.31 in Club account.
  2. Sonia Walsh submitted her resignation. Board accepted.
  3. RYLA we decided to reserve two spaces at $350 each. Phil will notify both schools and ask for applications. They will be available online after 3/15.
  4. Kuemper after prom submitted a request. We previously denied the public school so this was denied also.
  5. We will be determining our own scholarship winners again this year. The committee will be made up of President, past president, secretary, treasurer and president elect. Chis, Bob, John, Phil, Adam. If someone has a burning desire to join this committed contact Phil.
  6. Shirts will be ordered Tuesday (3/9) and should be in within 2-4 weeks.

Rotary Board Meeting January 4, 2021

Present: Bob, Adam, Deb, John, Ron, Ann, Hubert, Phil, Chris, Rich

  1. Treasurer report: Club $16,056.56 and Foundation: $13,670.22. We still owe $3,000 to scholarship winners.
  2. Discussion how should we pay scholarship winners? After a long discussion it was decided John will send a letter to the remaining winners and ask them to pick up check at Michael’s Shoes by January 30. This way Bob can get a picture for the paper. In the future we will notify the winners that they will get the money at the final Rotary meeting of the year (December 26, 2021) and will have to present a program on their first semester experience.
  3. After discussion it was decided that we will do the scholarships the same way in 2021 that we did in 2020. We will ask the guidance counselors to use the same form in 2021 that they had last year. We will determine a winner by April 30, 2021. We have no RYLA students so we will offer $250/student/school with a total of $2000 to each school. (NOTE: we have a project which we are asking a student(s) at CHS to do for us. We have verbally committed $1000 for those students for that project; see below.)
  4. HWY 30 project. Adam gave an update on what the coalition is working on. There is a project for the Ogden to Carroll stretch which they are trying to get a study done. The area Lisbon to the river has been studied and a 2 lane update recommended. The coalition is not in favor of a 2 lane update. Motion by Adam, Second by Ann to fund $100 to the coalition, all vote yes.
  5. We have a box of Rotary’s history and some items held in other places (I had some, Kim and Brett might have some) which we would like to get digitalized and are asking the Tiger Vision class at CHS for volunteers to do that work. They would receive a scholarship for that work. We need to go through all that stuff so we are meeting January 11 at 8:00 am to go through it. Meet at Michael’s Shoes to help. Kim? Brett? do you have any items? if so, please get them to Bob before next Monday.
