8/12/24 Meeting Minutes

Brag bucks/Anniversaries/Birthdays:
Rich Hartley – HOLE IN ONE this last weekend??? He is too busy celebrating to be here to confirm with us. 😊
Club Business:
- Cookies BBQ tour on 8/26/24 – change in time – be there by 10:30 AM (their request) due to their plant closes at 12 PM for lunch; tour will start at 11 AM sharp!
Speakers:
Scott Aden – CHS Middle School Principal partnered with New Opportunities to create a mentorship program
Mentors:
- 18 and older
- Background check is completed
- 1 hour per week – meet with the assigned student – would like a year commitment
- Provide young person with support, advice, friendship, reinforcement and constructive role modeling over time.
Benefits for youth (grades 5-8 right now):
- Less likely to skip school
- Work on academics, peer and family relationships, and social skills
- Connect through fun activities
- Better grades and academic performance
- Increased self-esteem and self-confidence
- Stronger relationships with parents, teachers and peers
- This program was very successful with the Cherokee CSD where Scott previously was.
- There will be a room at the school set aside to be used for the mentoring session and New Opportunities will keep it stocked with activities that can be done. See attached flyers for more information.
- Very rewarding for all involved.
Next meeting is Monday, August 19th from 12-1 PM – no speaker at this time.
