Speaker: Jim Feuto, Regency Park – Alzheimer’s Update
- Serving his 2nd 6-year term on IA Alzheimer’s board
- Pesticides and hearing loss are linked to Alzheimer’s
- One of the most expensive diseases in America; it costs more than heart disease and cancer
- Caring for people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias will cost the US an estimated $384 billion (in 2025 dollars)
- Biomarker testing is very accurate in determining if you will have in future; start testing at 65 for insurance to cover; would like testing to start at 55
- Brain changes may begin as many as 20 years prior to the onset of symptoms
- ASAP Act would allow for Medicare coverage of blood test screenings, allowing for early testing
- Statistics show 1 in 65 nationally will get Alzheimer’s
- There are more than 7 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s and that is expected to double by 2060
- AADAPT Act: Dementia care is not being taught in medical school, so PCPs aren’t confident in diagnosing and appropriate care isn’t available.
- $1 million annually for 5 years specific for education and workforce development
- Enhanced training can improve care quality and lower costs because PCPs will gain confidence in the disease and improved primary care can lead to lower overall health care costs by reducing unnecessary hospitalization.
- Virtual training would be an option for PCPs to learn and has been shown to be effective.
- It would also be a way to reach rural and underserved communities
