7/1/24 Meeting Minutes

- Aaron J.: celebrated daughter’s 4th birthday with a party
Club business:
- no socials during the summer
- we will be scheduling a business meeting during August to discuss our annual upcoming fundraiser
Speaker: Jessica Stangl with Iowa’s Jobs for America’s Graduates (I-JAG)
- offices at Carroll High School
- I-JAG has been around since 1999 and there are approximately 210 schools that offer the elective course (middle to high school age depending on location)
- available to all students
- focuses on life skills and helps students choose a career path
- wants to keep students in the community, so provides students with some community exposure
- 22 employers participated locally
- provides students with guidance in areas where they are struggling and helps them graduate
- Focuses on information technology, healthcare, advanced manufacturing and skilled trades careers because there will always be jobs in these fields and there is data that proves this
- I-JAG is a skill-building course that helps with resumes, self-introductions, teaching accountability, communication and confidence.
- I-JAG provides work-based learning by offering internships within the community
- reach out to Jessica if you are interested or know of a business that would be interested in offering an internship to a student.
Numbers involved in program:
- 10 students when program started
- 26 students when ’23 - ‘24 school year ended
- 46 students enrolled starting ’24 - ’25 school year already and can accept up to 60 students
- When Jess isn’t in the classroom, she is in the community setting up internships or supporting the students that are in the community learning.
- She takes the students to Build my Future at the Iowa State Fairgrounds where they get to experience multiple career opportunities and last year had a student score in the 98th percentile in welding when the student had never welded before.
- Jess follows students for 1 year after high school if they graduate and don’t have a plan. She also touches base with them monthly to see how they are doing or if they need any assistance with anything.
