Brag Bucks:
  • Phil – Sauk Trail Raffle – $20/ticket; drawing on 7/14/22 at Kerp’s Party Room at 5:30 PM
  • Adam – hosted 113 people in Carroll for the Snyder family reunion this past weekend
  • Bob F. – Carroll Open this weekend; no admission fee; come down and watch some slow-pitch softball
  • Steve – New Hope asking for $2,200 to help with upgrading First Aid kits; Adam made motion to donate $2,200; Phil seconded; Motion passed
  • Catti – Pella celebrated 40 years in Carroll this past Saturday
 
Speaker:
  • Mary Wittry with Carroll Solid and Waste Management
    • Employed there since 1991
    • Law in 1970 declared no more open city dumps
    • 1973 Carroll developed sanitary landfill to put waste into
    • Work wit many surrounding counties/cities to take on their waste
      • 1st county was Shelby in 1994
      • Cannot use the fees that are charged to the counties/cities for admin purposes
      • $10K is taken monthly from these fees and put into an equipment fund
    • Average 80K ton/year of waste
      • Carroll is approximately 22K of that
      • Current landfill has enough room until 2059 at the pace that we are filling it today.
      • 4,400 tons of recyclables are taken in every month at recycle center
      • 166K tons taken in since opening in 1990
        • Recycling is trending down due to internet, emails, etc.
      • Average 4.5 lbs/person/day of garbage
      • 30% of waste buried is food
        • Partnered with the local grocery chains and community of concern to reduce the amount of food waste
      • 1 incinerator in the state of IA (Ames)
    • Landfill uses inmates to pick up the trash that gets blown around
      • $5/day/inmate
    • Tipping fee is charged when anyone brings trash, currently the fee is $45/ton
      • Increased from $35/ton in 1994
      • Increasing to $47/ton on July 1st      
    • When the landfill reaches capacity, we must maintain it for another 30 years to ensure that toxins are in order
      • Lab costs/year are approximately $100K
    • $2.10/ton gets paid to IA DNR to use landfill
      • No longer pay this due to enrolling in Environmental Management System in 2014
        • This program does things like providing education about recycling and waste management.
