Carroll Rotary Club 5/2/22 Meeting Minutes
 
Meeting called to order by Chris at 12:10 PM at Family Table Restaurant.
 
Attendees: Chris, Catti, Nick G., Phil, Bob F., Hubert, John G., Joel, Bob W., Ron, Adam, Steve, Mike, Aaron, Trevor, Ann, Deb
 
Brag Bucks:
  • Deb – Trip to Germany and COVID (extended stay)
New Business:
  1. Alzheimer’s Association
    1. Gave $500 last year
    2. Bob F. motioned to donate $500 again this year, Deb seconded
    3. Motioned passed to donate $500 again this year – John will send check
  2. Scholarships
    1. 1 RYLA student from Kuemper guaranteed $1000
    2. 9 applicants total from Kuemper – 6 awarded
    3. 13 applicants from Carroll High – 9 awarded
    4. Each student awarded will receive $225.
    5. Catti to follow up with guidance counselors to see if schools create certificate of receipt or if we create so that they are provided certificate at scholarship awards night.
Speaker:
  • Iowa Soybean Association – Aaron Putze
  • Production:
    • IA has 40K soybean farmers
    • 8% of Iowa’s soybeans are currently planted for 2022
      • Mother Nature has not been on farmers side.
      • IA soybean crop can be planted in 3 weeks.
    • 2021 soybean stats:
      • 622 million bushels were harvested – new record
      • IA was #2 in soybean production in U.S.
      • IA produces 14% of U.S. production
      • Yield was 62/acre
      • $13.13 per bushel
    • U.S., Brazil, and Argentina produce the most soybeans
      • All countries export soybeans as well
    • China imports the most soybeans – by a landslide
  • Biofuels:
    • IA produces approximately 400 million gallons of biodiesel annually.
    • Demand is skyrocketing.
    • There are approximately 6500 full-time jobs in biofuels currently.
    • Cooking oil is turned into biodiesel.
    • Value added for soybean farmers:
      • Accounts for roughly $1.75 in the market value of every bushel of soybeans sold.
      • In 2021, soy biofuels created $90/acre in value for soybean farmers (nationally).
      • For IA soybean farmers, market value of biofuels generates almost $110/acre.
  • Trip to Brazil
    • Roads are terrible and often privately paved.
    • Rains a lot (almost daily).
    • When buying land in Brazil they are required to preserve 35% of the land in its natural preserve (timber to pasture to row crop).
    • Burn actual eucalyptus to dry crop.
 
Next meeting is Monday, May 9th and our speaker will be the top 10 students from Carroll High.
