Speaker: Darcy Maulsby – Goat Farming
- 200 breeds of goats exist
- No special licenses needed to raise goats
- What do they eat: weeds and if you wanted to feed them a grain you could work with a local feed store, and they will help you determine what you need or what would be best
- Domesticated 10,000 years ago
- Produce a lot of good foods: meat (chevon or cabrito), milk, cheese (sour) – must follow food regulations if raising goats to sell for produce
- Used as weed control
- “Goats on the Go” – a business where they will bring goats in and eat the shrubs/weeds that need to go
- Work in rough terrain, with little risk of erosion
- Valuable fertilizer is the only by-product
- Need more resources in Western Iowa
- Practical Farmers of Iowa: offer a variety of resources on goat farming for Spanish-speaking people
- Valentina’s in Storm Lake
- Came from Mexico
- Bought an old auction site and transforming it into a market/farm where those of the Spanish culture can purchase goat meat
- Iowa Meat Goat Association (IMGA) around since 2003
- Goat programs and participation becoming more popular in the state of Iowa with participation in fairs
- IMGA provides publicity, educational programs, and other activities in the interest of meat goat owners and enthusiasts
- IMGA exists to educate, encourage and explore
- Goodness from the goats – local boutique
- Soaps
- Hand lotions
- All natural products that help with skin conditions
