Updates:
Guest Bartender event: we raised $470 in tips to be used in our projects in the community
Chamber Coffee: we had a great turnout and excellent representation from our Rotary members
Auction: items are being uploaded as they are received; radio/newspaper ads will begin soon; letters for donation have been mailed to local businesses
Speakers:
City Council Candidates: Justin McCool, Jerry Fleshner, Carolyn Siemen, Jason Atherton, LaVern Dirkx
All candidates expressed their focus on the housing crisis that Carroll is currently experiencing. They all supported continuing a partnership with the Carroll County Growth Partnership group.
Here is an update on what his happening with the housing:
- 18 of the 20 $20K incentives to build new houses within the city of Carroll have been claimed.
- Region 12 incentive in the works regarding building/remodeling.
- 4 large lots on the city municipal golf course that could be used for houses or condos.
- Low interest rates are a thing of the past.
- Fairview Apartments: the housing council presented to the USDA in Washington D.C. about partnering together to clean up the apartments.
- There are a total of 72 units right now.
- 28 are livable, but only 6 of those units should be lived in.
- There is mold and sewage everywhere.
- There is a lot of violence that takes place at these apartments.
- Ultimately it is the USDA’s decision on if they foreclose on the current owner.
- State of Iowa is also involved as there was a lot of interest that was generated from the Washington D.C. meeting.
Next meeting is on Monday, October 23rd from 12-1 PM at The Hub (you can enter through the front doors of The Hub now) and our speakers will be the school board candidates.
