PRESIDENT PHALPHER'S PEN
Both Thanksgiving and Hallowe’en fell in October, our activities in October showcased both.

We held a celebratory luncheon on Thursday, Oct 12th to ‘thank’ our sponsors of the 2017 Ribfest. Present at the event were 20 of the 30+ sponsors; also present were five representatives of the several community organizations supported by us and 5 friends of Rotary, the non-Rotarians who help us plan and the annual event.  The event was reported by the Beaver in their Oct 19th issue, the issue that also had a one page ad on Rotary and Polio Plus.  A week later, we kicked-off the planning for the 2018 Ribfest, scheduled for June 22 to 24th

Here comes the scary part. It overlaps with the 2018 Rotary International Conference in Toronto that is scheduled from June 24th to 27th, and our club has committed to the following:

  • Hosting 45 to 50 Past District Governors, courtesy Will Pugh, PDG, District 7080, at the Ribfest VIP tent on Saturday, June 23rd
  • Active participation in the ‘Beyond Borders’ dinner hosted by PDG Ian Ferguson at the Hockey Hall of Fame on Sunday, June 24th
  • Jointly with other the two Oakville clubs, hosting a dinner at the Oakville Golf Club on Monday, June 25th for 45 - 50 of the International Rotarians attending the Conference
In addition to these commitments, John Carr of the Host Organizing Committee visited our club on October 19th to present an overview of the 2018 International Conference and solicit volunteers for the event.  The Committee is expecting 35,000+ guests from around the World.

This overlap does require better resource planning on our part, but I am sure we will come through, making both events a great success.

On October 26th, we had a good-sized crowd enjoy another successful Wines & lines fundraising event at the OE Banquet Hall on Speers Road.
The three guest authors: Shari Lapena, Ian Hamilton and Kate Hilton, conversed with panel host, the Right Honourable Member of Parliament for Oakville North-Burlington, Pam Damoff.  The evening concluded with a raffle draw for 30 bottles of wine that was happily won by Don Blunt. A very big thank-you goes out to Janice Tobia and Jennifer Deighton for organizing the event.

In November, we are observing Remembrance Day at our meeting on November 9th and Paul Harris Awards for Club members is scheduled for November 23rd.  Details on these two events are covered on our Website or elsewhere in this issue of RIOTS.

'HANDS-ON' OPPORTUNITIES & THINGS TO DO

Club members have expressed a desire to have more 'hands-on' involvement with the community.

In RIOTS and the Weekly Courier we are now showing where there are opportunities to be 'hands-on' and be involved as either a volunteer, a participant or both. We'll keep this section going as long as we have the content to support it.

Thanks to all members who have contributed items to the Online Auction.

We supported a WASH project in Uganda with Rotary Eglinton as the lead International Club. Below is an update.

we are pleased to share with you the first pictures of Phase 1 of our WASH program in 4 schools in the Bugiri District of Uganda.

The Global Grant was approved on June 16, 2017 and the official launch of the program was held on August 19 at the Niagoma Primary School. Rotarian Nilam Bedi of Rotary: Toronto Eglinton visited Uganda in August and met with members of our partner club Ntinda and the newly formed Bugiri Rotary Club

You will notice the involvement of the community members, school staff and students in construction of latrines and rainwater harvesting tanks.

WE JUST NEED SOME APPS!

Do you know any awesome students, born between Sept 1, 2000 and March 1, 2003, who deserve the opportunity of a lifetime? Learn a new language, experience a new culture, go to high school and make friends from around the world? There is no better opportunity to mature, explore, ignite the mind. This is it!

Our Rotary club is looking for that next very special student to spend 2018-2019 in one of the following countries: Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand, Finland, Italy, France, Poland, Switzerland, Brazil, Peru or Argentina. (students do not pick their country...they must be open to any opportunity).

Rotary Youth Exchange is the LARGEST student exchange program in the world, run by dedicated volunteers so it is also one of the least expensive and offers the most support.

Applications are now being accepted for outbound students 2018-2019. Deadline is Oct 31st.

Please email cathywhittaker@royallepage.ca for more details.
