Sixteen years after University of Iowa law graduate Paul Harris began Rotary in Chicago, IL, Rotary came to Ames, Iowa. The Ames Rotary Club was chartered March 1, 1921 with the following members:
Edwin J. Bodwell, a superintendent of Ames schools until May 1926. Dr. Ben G. Budge, a 1905 graduate of Iowa State, who practiced medicine in Ames from January 1911 until October 1941. Appointed to the Mary Greeley hospital board in 1939, he was active in the "recent building program." He also delivered the first president of Ames Morning Rotary. Harry B. Dunlap, who established Dunlap Motor Co., Oldsmobile Sales & Service, at 222 Duff Avenue. Almon H. Fuller, a professor and head of engineering at Iowa State, serving from 1920 to 1957. Ivan Hasbrouck, officer in Ames Trust and Savings Bank, who served as the first president of Ames Rotary, leaving before his term was up to become active in banking in Jefferson, IA. Henry K. Hawley, minister of the First Congregational Church from 1915-1935. He was made an Honorary Rotarian in 1934. Carl L. Little, Ames real estate dealer for 42 years and former postmaster, was an Ames resident since 1877. Harry McCormac, hardware retailer. Alfred H. Munn, an Iowa State student who quit school prior to graduation to help his father establish Munn Lumber Co. He was also a vice president of Union Trust & Savings Bank in 1903, and served on the original Board of Trustees of Mary Greeley hospital, being appointed by Cap Greeley. Munn was also the great-grandfather of Erik Munn, a charter member of the Ames Morning Rotary. Alex M. Norris, owner of Norris Grocery from 1916-1926. George W. Snedecor, professor of mathematics at Iowa State. George H. Snyder, Ames dentist from 1906-1950. Harris W. Stafford, president of Ames Trust and Savings Bank for 26 years, and the first of three generations of Ames Rotarians. Lowell C. Tallman, long-time jeweler and watch repairman. J. Galen Tilden, a native of Ames, ran the Tilden Mfg. Co., later known as Collegiate Mfg. Co. He was part of the group which purchased the Greeley estate's interest in the Union National Bank, and was named president at that time. Lucian C. Tilden, an Ames High School graduate. Managed the Tilden Store in Ames.
