THELCA BEDMINSTER, Principal of Jane E. Tuitt Elementary School was Sunrise’s guest speaker at our July 31st meeting.
Thankfully the school received minimal damage after last year’s storms and with the outpouring of support from educators and their families on the US Mainland, every Tuitt classroom was adopted. Teacher received “care packages” of classroom supplies throughout the school year. A grant from CFVI provided a program on local culture and historical tours of the Savan area. Children even participated in workshops teaching the fine art of chair caning.
Mrs. Bedminster spoke about an initiative the school introduced entitled, Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS). PBIS teaches good behavior as a subject, just like reading and math. The key is prevention, not punishment. The students received tickets when they demonstrated good behavior which could be redeemed in the school’s “store” for various classroom-friendly items.
