Fellow Rotarians and Friends of Rotary,

Before I even attempt to address you in my capacity as this Club's new President, let me share..

one of the fundamentals according to which I lead my daily life and by which I will certainly function as the elected President of the Rotary Club of St.Martin Sunrise 2008-09.

A teacher once said to his student:

"Do your best to present yourself as one approved a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the issues of life."

We Rotarians and Rotaractors believe strongly in Service above Self. Therefore, though I have probably not reached the level of wisdom and knowledge of the teacher from whom I have borrow the quotation, I am humbled by the opportunity to take on the task of leading this group of admirable local business women and men and dedicated community leaders which you are, a group of woman and men adamant about making services to others an important and necessary element.

Should I remind you that we, you and I, need to present ourselves, deliberately, intentionally as Rotarians approved, workers who do not need to be ashamed?

Rotary Club of St. Maarten Sunrise is celebrating its first lustrum, and we wish to do so along with the many volunteers and friends.

Fellow Rotarians and Rotaractors we have to take responsibility for the up-keeping and the improvement of the environment we live in. The community of St. Maarten/St. Martin will be better when our efforts intentionally seek to show that we will work at upgrading its components  and as such make it a better place for us and for those who visit us.

As we continue to contribute to the Rotary Foundation, we help bring about a positive change together with over 1.2 million other individuals worldwide who are proud to be called Rotarians.

Our 2008 motto is: "Making Dreams Real". It is through the dedicated service of directors and workers that we will seek to bring about positive change in the lives of women and men around this island.

Work pursues objectives.

Objectives are born of Dreams.

Dreams give life a reason to be lived.

Therefore we will continue with our programs such as mentoring trouble youth, extending our drinking water projects to the primary schools on the island. Ensuring that our local orphanage can maintain a sufficient supply of fresh bread daily, just to name a few. We will lend a Rotarian hand to bringing awareness about mental and physical issues affecting our communities. These are but a fraction of the projects that will help to make the Dreams of girls and boys, women and men, the elderly. (They dream too) become reality.

Fellow Rotarians and Rotaractors, by the end of my mandate, I wish for everyone of us, together, to be able to quote the words of the wise man as we look back at our various accomplishments and say: "we are workmen who have shown ourselves approved and who have correctly handled the issues of life towards mankind on St Maarten/St Martin"

To close, as President, I pledge to carry on the good works of Rotary Club of St. Martin Sunrise and to stimulate the fostering of new relationships and synergies with other foundations and institutions only to impact in a most significant manner the quality of life for all here. This however cannot be done without your continued support and contribution. May I remind you that:

You can help make the difference in our world

You can help our children obtain a good education in our schools

You can assist with the cleaning up of our environment

You can contribute to the higher ethical standards in our workplaces and professional services and organizations

I thank you for your attention.

President

Claret Connor
