On March 28 the Rotary Club of St Martin Sunrise in collaboration with the Philipsburg Jubilee Library honored all the participants in ‘Readers are Leaders’, a reading program aimed at all high school students on St Maarten.  The goal of ‘Readers are Leaders’ is to turn St Maarten’s teenagers into avid readers.  Reading helps our youth to develop imagination, curiosity and the ability to think outside the box.

After last year’s success, ‘Readers are Leaders’ grew even bigger with more students and schools participating in the challenge to read at least 2 books per month. This year over a 100 students participated, either individually at the Library or through the ‘Readers are Leaders’ program at St. Maarten Academy and St. Maarten Vocational School. They took the challenge very seriously. The ‘Readers are Leaders’ club also organized other events such as a very successful poetry evening.

As extra incentives to encourage participants to continue reading, special prizes are awarded to the best participants. This year’s winners are: Jenice Forbes and Fatimah Karim (St. Maarten Academy); Johnny Elizee and Tamika DeWeever (St. Maarten Vocational School); Lilawatee Arjune and Isaiah Escallier (Jubilee Library submissions). During the Award Ceremony at the Library the winner of each group was presented a laptop (donated by Klass Electronics, Boolchands and Zhaveri Jewelers) and the runner-up received a kindle (sponsored by Princess Juliana International Airport and MNO Vervat). All participants were rewarded with goodie bags and pizza to close of the evening (thanks to the contributions of DHL, Western Union, Nagico Insurances, RBC Royal Bank, Pretty Good T-Shirts and Domino’s Pizza).

Rotary’s Literacy Month was concluded with the successful final event of this year’s ‘Readers are Leaders’ program. It proves once more that our youth are capable and willing to make the effort to improve themselves. The Board of Sunrise Rotary Club would like to thank all corporate sponsors for their generous donation and all those who worked tirelessly toward helping our youth discover a new world through reading, namely Karia Arnold and Monique Alberts from the Jubilee Library, the Readers are Leaders' student board and members of the Sunrise Rotary Club.
