March 21 is celebrated as World Down Syndrome Day. The day is celebrated in effort to raise awareness about Down syndrome and to advocate for the rights, inclusion, and well-being of people with Down syndrome. Down syndrome is a genetic disorder caused when abnormal cell division results in an extra full or partial copy of chromosome 21. This extra genetic material causes the developmental changes and physical features of Down syndrome.

The 2023 theme for World Down Syndrome Day is 'With Us, Not For Us'. The intention is to convey that people with disabilities also have the right to be treated fairly and have the same opportunities as everyone else.
