On Friday 7th October, 30 members of the EarlyAct Club of Enis Adams School, a youth club sponsored by the Rotary Club of Road Town, accompanied by teacher Mrs. Susan Gregg visited the Road Town Fire Station. The visit was part of a series of monthly project activities organised for the Club to broaden members’ interests outside of the classroom, and coincided with the end of National Fire Safety Week.

The Club was welcomed by Officer Chalwell who provided an introduction to the services carried out by the Fire Service and gave some tips on fire safety. He then answered a number of questions. The group then visited the “first response” emergency centred where Officer Thomas  explained how 999, or 911 calls, or 112 from mobile devices, were handled. Members were then given a tour of one of the Fire Service’s fire trucks where it was explained how each of the gadgets was used in an emergency. Then each member was given the opportunity to handle one of the truck’s fire hoses.

Wrapping up the visit, Chief William Penn thanked the members for coming to visit the Fire Station during National Fire Safety Week and re-iterated the need for care when handling hazardous materials to prevent accidents. Club members were very appreciative of the opportunity to see at first hand what the Fire service do.
