On Saturday 4th May at the early hour of 5.30am, some 17 members of the EarlyAct Club of Ebenezer Thomas Primary School, together with 8 teachers and parents gathered at the school to carry out a second environmental clean up.
.
This time they chose the stretch of road between their School in Sea Cows Bay and up to Island Department Store in Duffs Bottom. In all they collected close to 100 bags of garbage including several hundred beer bottles, cans, polystyrene, plastic bags, even an old TV.

Commenting on the two hours spent pulling garbage from the roadside and the immediate bushes, President of the Club, Leah Smith said “ It is incredible just how much garbage people throw away at random, which is unsightly and unhealthy”. One of the school advisers, teacher Monette Smith added “People need to take their garbage home and not just throw it out their car windows; in some cases we collected sacks of garbage people had just thrown on the side. We must learn to take care of our environment.”

.

Afterwards, everyone enjoyed a very nourishing, and welcome breakfast organised by staff and parents at the Queen Elizabeth Park. This is the second cleanup that the Club has been involved with; earlier in the year, they cleaned the roadside from the school to Nanny Cay.

The EarlyAct Club of Ebenezer Thomas Primary School is one of three EarlyAct Clubs in the BVI, and was chartered in November 2012 under the sponsorship of the Rotary Club of Rotary Town. The Club caters for children of Primary School age, and seeks to develop leadership skills, encourage personal development and introduce them to the concept of helping in the community, and have fun doing it.

With the Rotary District Conference set to begin on 14th May here in the BVI, this was a timely reminder of the contribution that the Rotary family makes to the betterment of  our islands.
