Literacy Tutoring Programme Wraps Up for this School Year

The 24 Grade 4 students we helped at Negril All Age School took their test the first week of June; unfortunately, we will not know the results until start of school in September.

We wish to thank each of the 22 volunteer tutors for their dedication and patience!  The love between student and tutor was obvious – as many times, the minute a student saw their tutor enter the school ground, he or she would grab their book bag, and stand up at Ms. Johnson’s desk awaiting permission to go.  Most of the tutors found the desired session was after 10 am when the public library opened and we were welcomed to work in that spacious and quiet environment.  A portion of the hour was often spent in the library’s computer room on learning sites such as Starfall and Mrnussbaum.

This programme will start up again in October with the handful of students who do not pass the Grade 4 test.  We are dialoguing with school officials to begin working with students in either Grade 1 or 2 to assist those who are struggling with reading at a younger age.
