President Mahendra Shah called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m.
Reena Sandhu gave the Land Acknowledgement and led in the singing of the National Anthem.
President Mahendra proposed a toast to King George lll and Canada.
Ralf Soeder gave the invocation.
Jay, a potential new member was introduced by President Mahendra.
Frank Morewood introduced his wife Jean Anne.
Sid Joshi, a new member-to-be, and Karen Sonim, speaker for the evening, were introduced by President Mahendra.
The announcements were as follows:
- Members who are putting forward names for the Paul Harris Fellowship Awards are to send bios to Amin Kawar.
- Mike Henry encouraged everyone to bid on the online auction items to raise the prices. Francesca has made 10 gift baskets using the wine contributed by members. We have $16,000 in items listed. The auction runs until November 18.
- Bob Dodds announced the Christmas party is on December 18. A choir will be the evening entertainment. Bob is seeking donations from members to pay for centrepieces, which Tareq Nasser’s wife Nada will be making for us.
Dinner was served.
Ralf skipped the fines but collected Happy Bucks.
Frank Morewood’s Happy Buck was for his recent birthday, the 89th!
Ralf introduced our speaker Karen Slonim.
Karen is a health educator focusing on older adults and working out of the Sheridan College campus.
• She described a research project she is doing regarding frailty and dementia involving three different communities.
• She stressed how important it is to develop trust with the subjects in the project and said that takes a long time.
• It is important to listen to the needs expressed by the subjects in the study and not to make assumptions about what their needs are and what programs should be provided.
Rae Townsend thanked Karen for her presentation.
President Mahendra added his thanks and told Karen the club would make a donation to Polio Plus in her name.
President Mahendra inducted Sid Joshi into the club.
Sid said that he was encouraged to join the club after meeting the members and receiving their sincere welcome.
The next meeting will be in two weeks.
