RCO Meeting October 19, 2020 Rotary Club of Oakville Meeting of October 19, 2020 – via ZOOM The meeting was called to order by President Mike Henry at 7:00pm with a toast to Queen and Canada. The invocation was provided by Tareq Nasser. Attendance: A total of 20 people signed into the Zoom meeting – 17 members plus 3 guests (Mike Lawrie, Bent Fink-Jensen and David Peters – potential new member). Announcements: - President Elect – Mike thanked Michael Conway for stepping up [thank you Michael 😊]
- We are continuing to hold meetings on Zoom next month
- Online auction – Mike thanked those who have donated wine, etc. to date, thanked our sponsors and thanked Ralf. Please email Mike if you are happy to advertise our online auction with a lawn sign.
- Judy – Speaker Series – Beverly McLachlin is available in May or June (not April) – maybe hybrid – Five Drive-in + online across Canada. Judy & Len met with OHF about how they can help us to make this event a success. Gary Comerford suggested a 100% online event instead, and suggested inviting the RI President Nominee Jennifer Jones. [The Speaker Series Committee had a very productive meeting after tonight’s club meeting.]
- Michael Conway & Mahendra Shah showed us a video about the Hippo Roller – our latest international project. Mahendra also mentioned a couple more international projects in the pipeline.
- Mike reminded us that October 24 is World Polio Day. Watch this space for how we are going to celebrate this as the Oakville Rotary cluster.
- Kevin Shao mentioned hands-on projects that he would like our members to volunteer for:
- Oct 29 at 10am packing hand-made Hallowe’en treats into bags
- Oct 31 handing these bags out to residents
- Nov 7 or 21 RBG clearing invasive species 1pm to 3pm
- Nov 13 collecting food donations from vehicles that are attending an Oakville Hospital Foundation event at the Five Drive-in (to be donated to Oakville food banks)

Happy Bucks & Fines (Riona Naidu): - Rio gave us a bespoke quiz on the Rotary wheel, and fines were rolled out
- Judy was happy abut the success of the seniors’ event last Thursday that we organized for our tenants, and was happy to be in Huntsville today with her extended family
- Rio was happy that she and Viv had decorated their house for Hallowe’en over the weekend
DG Mike Lawrie inducted our newest member – Hasan Bin Sohail, as sponsored by Frank Morewood The speaker, District Governor Mike Lawrie was introduced by Bent Fink Jensen, the Oakville Area Governor. Mike talked to: - His background in Rotary, including his club (Cambridge Sunrise)

- The benefits of each club having its own strategic plan
- The Rotary Foundation’s $93m (USD) budget
- Unique challenges for Rotary clubs as a result of COVID-19, and how we are meeting those challenges
- RAISE - a new platform from RI, for new opportunities for fundraising
- Taking care of self, each other and the planet
- Africa declared Polio free August 2020
- Rotary’s evolving partnership with Toastmasters
