Turtle Family Fun Day

Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Redcliffe Sunrise and members of the local Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group (ESRAG Oceania) are hosting a Turtle Family Fun Day.

The day will include guest speakers and activities for the children.

It is a free event and it intended to raise awareness of the turtles that call Moreton Bay home, and cruise near shore along Peninsula beaches grazing on food or seeking suitable nest sites.

This is the second year this event will be held. The inaugural Turtle Family Fun Day was held on 20 April 2024 at the same venue.

Last year's guest speakers included Bond University's Darryl McPhee, Associate professor and author of the Environmental History and Ecology of Moreton Bay; Councillor Cath Tonks who holds the Healthy Environments portfolio for the City of Moreton Bay; and Elvis Okoffo of Queensland Alliance for Environmental Health Sciences, whose current research focuses on developing novel sampling approaches and analytical techniques for monitoring plastic residues in environmental samples.

Skylah Dick from Kids Caper Childcare ensured the children did not miss out and Dianne Oxenford from Bribie Island turtle trackers simulated a turtle egg hunt (ping pong balls) in the sand for the youngsters. 

Michael Connelly from Dreamtime Kullill-Art welcomed everyone to 'saltwater country' and bush tucker aficionado Bruce Phillips of Murri Tucker shared his delicacies. Plus Sharron mirii Bell  from indigenous Insights [Straight from the ABC studios] will be doing the singing and dancing for the children - The less adventurous enjoyed the sausage sizzle.
