Serving The Homeless

John Knickerbocker, Development Director, Carriage Town Ministries, provided an extensive overview at last week's meeting of the non-profit's mission and involvement in the Flint community.

The organization was started in 1950 and was originally named the "City Rescue Mission of Flint", whose sole purpose was to provide shelter and food for men from 5 pm through 7 am the following day.  Since 1987, the organization has been located on Garland Street in Flint, serving on average about 60 men per day.  In 1992 the organization expanded, purchased some additional nearby buildings, and added services to women.  Today the organization has capacity for 115 beds.

All individuals who stay at the shelter must put together a personal success plan which contains the following components:

1.  Knowing God

2.  Work or Service Component

3.  Education

The organization has recently purchased four more buildings and plans to expand in order to serve the increasing needs of the homeless.
