Subject: 11 Days to New Orleans and Counting

Importance: High

Did you know that the Mississippi touches all or a part of 31 of the United States?  Well that includes the State of Louisiana.  So, the geographically

savvy, are starting to wonder if the mighty Mississippi will pick convention time to give us an unwanted bath.

THE ANSWER IS A BIG "NO"!

The New Orleans CVB has spoken with City officials who are in constant  communication with the United States Army Corps of Engineers to monitor the

water levels of the Mississippi River in the New Orleans area.  Should it become necessary the Army Corps will activate flood control systems in the

area, in particular, what is called the Bonnet Carre Spillway. The Spillway is a key part of a flood control system in the Lower Mississippi Valley .

Located in St. Charles Parish, Louisiana - about 12 miles west of New Orleans - it is a system that diverts waters from the Mississippi River into

Lake Pontchartrain then to the Gulf of Mexico, with waters bypassing the City of New Orleans . This strategy was last implemented in 2008 and the

Army Corps tested the system April 5, 2011. Activation of the Spillway creates no disruption to daily life of residents, businesses or visitors in

New Orleans .
