Habitat for Humanity
On August 11, 2010, Christine Robinson, newly appointed Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity USVI spoke to Rotary II on the new initiative of "Golden Touch"
Habitat for Humanity of the U. S. Virgin Islands was incorporated in 2005 as a non-profit organization and is a Habitat for Humanity International affiliate. The ultimate goal is to eliminate substandard housing and homelessness worldwide to make adequate, decent affordable shelter a matter of conscience to individuals whose lives are impacted in our communities.
This year the focus of the home modification program in active partnership with the Department of Human Services USVI has been designated for senior citizens and disabled adults with physical limitations and restricted mobility. The program is named “Golden Touch” and the purpose is to mitigate the impact of physical limitations and to remove health and safety hazards in order to promote more independence to seniors in their golden years.
The program also brings together volunteers form service groups, businesses, congregations, and community at large. The homes of selected senior citizens and disabled adults will receive modifications such as installation of access ramps, widening of door openings, installation of grab bars, and other accessibility related improvements.
