4-Way Test Essay

In today’s society, as a teenager, telling the truth isn’t always the easiest thing to do.  However, I try my best to be truthful and never spread rumors.  Before I repeat anything I hear, I mak sure that it is the whole truth, and if it is not something good, I do not repeat it.  When I get in trouble, and I rarely do, the truth sometimes does not cross my mind;  however,  when I stop to consider the consequences, I usually choose to tell the truth.

The second question that the four way test of the Rotary Club asks is: Is it fair to all concerned.  To live this out, I always thing about all the people that my actions may hurt.  When something happens, right away most young people think about having a good laugh while their classmate or friend is hurting.  At times the one being hurt may be themselves or even their parents.  In circumstances such as this, I ask myself, “Am I treating others the way I would like to be treated?

Will my actions build goodwill and better friendships?  I do not think that there are bad friends; there are just people who do not think about long term effects.  In order to build good friendships, I do not depend on the other person to be good to me; I try first to be good to them.  I am also a friend to my community, by participating in community work.

How will what I do benefit all concerned?  Participating in class discussions, volunteering, and helping my classmates who are having a difficult time are some things that benefit all concerned.  Sleeping in class, skipping classes and being rude, on the other hand, benefit no one.
