Jim Tunick Inducted as Honorary Rotarian
It is a good thing to be rich, and it is a good thing to be strong, but it is a better thing to be loved of many friends. ~Euripides
A friend – those two words were notably the most descriptive and heartfelt words that came to mind for all who recognized Jim Tunick at the July 19 honorary induction ceremony.
“I have known Jim for a third of a century and have remained friends to this day. I wish you good health and long life”, began Dr. Albert Heath as he opened remarks honoring Jim. Terry Robinson echoed the same sentiments as he wished Jim a wonderful life and observed that Jim is a true Rotarian who “always stepped up to volunteer to do what needed to be done and it is a privilege to call him a friend".
John Foster, who was not able attend, sent these sentiments: “Jim is always dedicated and resourceful; I am glad to be counted among his many friends. His fundraiser efforts were true to the spirit of Rotary.”
Mary Gleason who followed Jim as President and Larry Benjamin both reflected on being fortunate to be called his friend. Larry commented Jim is also a great captain. Bill Schumacher and George Blackhall each offered remarks on it being a pleasure working with Jim and along with good wishes thanked him for all he has done. Similarly, Marston Winkles noted that Jim was his second sponsor and that Jim was responsible for the Orleans concert – one of the club’s most successful fundraisers.
Jim first thanked his wife, Becky, who is active with Inner Wheel, for her support and encouragement. He stated Rotary has meant a lot to him and has been a big part of his life. He acknowledged several members from whom he learned the lessons that Rotary can be fun and it is about service and community. Among those who were an inspiration is Babe Monsanto. Together the two chartered the first Interact Club at Charlotte Amalie High School. Jim closed by saying, “Rotary is great; it is a way of life. I am deeply honored and deeply touched.”
Jim Tunick’s induction as an Honorary Rotarian was recommended by and approved under Immediate Past President Carolyn Cole and her 2011-12 Board. Together with current President Sue Boland, the plaque was presented recognizing Jim as an Honorary Rotarian of 39 years of service.
Congratulations, Jim – your recognition is well deserved!
