What Happened?

So how DO you keep those ghosts from haunting you??  Guest, Jim Heskett of Maine, suggests taking care of their resting place is a good way to start.  Jim moved to St. John nine months ago and already wants to help make a difference.  He reported at our April 22^nd meeting,  that there are at least fourteen veterans (with plaques) buried in the Cruz Bay cemetery.  The cemetery needs new fencing, covered viewing platforms, retaining walls, and music to our ears—a sidewalk on the bay side.  He is working with the St. John Community Foundation and the Department of Public Works on this and hopes to have it done by Memorial Day 2016.

 

We received word that an EDC company on St. Thomas wants to help feed the homeless on St. John.  This led to discussion on what happens to un-used food at restaurants and markets.  And we were reminded by Ian, of Martin Luther King asking, “Who have you helped today?”

 

Visiting Rotarian Jeanne is from a club of 250 members which does two international projects and a dozen youth projects each year.  (that made us very proud of our fourteen St. John projects for the next Rotary year!)  Rotarian Ted’s club has 55 members and they host a craft fair at the vocational school, a half carnival, and an electronic auction.  They encourage career planning in conjunction with the local community college.

 

Last week we discussed the board of directors meeting and advised Symone that she had been 'volunteered' to take over posting on our Facebook page.  She graciously agreed.  Thanks Symone!

 

President Alecia advised the group that Dr. Minner of Gifft Hill School has been working with Sprauve School to get their farming program set up.

 

Our tens of thousands of books are on their way, and Ian pointed out that we need to develop some clear goals for these books on St. John—perhaps a book club of sorts—but certainly we need to work with the schools on a distribution network soon!
