Acupuncture was developed over five thousand years ago by Buddhist monks, who started with acupressure.  There are thousands of points in our body sensitive to pressure and Dr. May Trieu showed us a few.  May graduated from Western Medical School and came to St. Thomas to do her internship and residency.  Like many, she never left.  Her job seemed less than rewarding because of the over use of drugs, and although her mother was a pharmacist and her father a surgeon, she began studying Chinese medicine and became proficient at acupuncture and diagnosis by looking at the tongue.  Interesting fact:  the tongue changes after a couple seconds, so when using its condition to diagnose, you have to be lightening fast!  Dr. Trieu believes that western civilizations tend to over medicate and that health should consider balance between mind and body, nutrition and herbal supplements.  People should reduce stress levels by exercising and meditating daily--start small and build on it, alone or with others.  So we ended our meeting with both a group meditation and a group chant and all felt the difference that slowing down and centering our energy could make!
