We adopted a beach!

Nine intrepid St John Rotarians gathered at Jumbie Beach Saturday morning. Starting at the road and working toward the beach, then from the beach working toward the road they braved stinging nettle, catch and keep, and other spiky flora to gather three large garbage bags of litter.

This cleanup was as a part of Coastal Cleanup Weeks (starting on Sep 16th this year) for our adopted beach. Led by Catherine Fahy, the team included Joan Bermingham, John Fuller, Kathy Hurley, Chris Wegener, Doug White (and wife Leslie), and Bill Willigerod.

Jumbie is a relatively clean beach, not subject to hordes of tourists nor flotsam and jetsam. Yet we collected over 70 cans, almost 100 bottles (mostly glass), numerous food wrappers and containers, 10 shoes, 1 balloon, 1 golf ball and one automobile tire and rim.

Over half the team took advantage of being at Jumbie and took to the water to allegedly "check for litter underwater". One small plastic part was recovered during the aquatic portion of the cleanup.

Members will be advised of future cleanups - should be simpler as we've been pretty thorough this time. So join us for a good time doing a good deed.
