Timmy Newton receives Rotary Club of St. John's $12,500 scholarship award for 2010.  At our June 4th, 2010 meeting he received his check, photo.

The runner-ups were Joanne Berthier, Danella Bridgewater and Christin Marsh.  They were excellent candidates and this was a hard decision to make so they all received a $500 runner's-up check.  The Rotary Club of St. John's scholarship committee is: Brenda Dalmida (non-member), Catherine Fahy (President 2009-2010), John Fuller (PP 2007-2008), BJ Harris (PP 2008-2009), Katherine Steinborn and William Willigerod.  An online interview with Timmy Newton in the St. John Source by Lynda Lohr may be found here: http://stjohnsource.com/content/news/local-news/2010/06/13/school-timmy-newton-get-rotary-scholarship

The award winner was announced in the packed Winston Wells field on St. John on Memorial Day, Monday May 31, 2010.  This is the fifth annual event that occurs on the Javon Jade "JJ" Alfred Fun Day.  This is an event that honors the memory of Deverell Alfred's seven year old son who was taken from us in a tragic accident. JJ  He was struck and killed on his way home from a school Christmas event by a delivery truck in December 2004.  Ms. Alfred is quoted: "You never know when something is going to happen.  You want to know that you spent as much time with your kids as you possibly could."  Another article on this may be found in St. John Tradewinds newspaper, June 7-13, 2010 on page 7.

Timmy has been accepted at the University of the Virgin Islands to pursue a degree in Computer Science with an eye toward designing video games.  He also plans to study to be the Chef in his own diner some day.  Timmy clearly has diverse interests.
