We welcomed both visiting Rotarians and guests at our meeting

Anna Paiewonsky is a member of the St. Thomas Rotary club.  She announced her new role as Area Coordinator for Projects, and has offered to help us with both District and Global grants in the near future.  We talked about the camera that can diagnose childhood deficiencies that impair learning for a possible grant application.
Lonnie Willis, president of the St. John Historical Society, brought news of plans to develop their land in Belleview with a museum, archives, and pavilion.  Many steps will be involved, including archaeological, design, fundraising and finally construction.  In the meantime, the SJHS has undertaken the gift of three bronze statues to the Danish people--the freedom fighter blowing the conch, and busts of John Gottliff (Buddhoe) and D. Hamilton Jackson.  Apparently the Danes are struggling with their history of enslavement and this gift from St. John will travel the country and raise awareness of the history. They have raised two of the five thousand dollars required to crate and ship to Denmark.  Watch for future Historical Society events--'All in the Family', with artifacts from key native St. John families, and an interesting and fun treasure hunt through Cruz Bay's history.
Sharon advised us that the renovation of Guy Benjamin School as a community center is progressing, with a meeting room to be the first step.  School of the Arts classes and hopefully a computer center will be next.  The possibility of developing a cultural and visitor center is also on the drawing board.  Coral Bay Labor Day festivities will include the iconic parade, scheduled to start at eleven am.  Participants should be there by ten thirty and spectators will want to make a day of it!
