The Rotary and Rotaract Clubs of Grand Cayman welcomed District Governor Felix Stubbs and his wife PP Carla to the Cayman Islands for their official visit to the Island from July 16
th – 19
th.
AG Eric Bush met the DG and his wife on arrival from the Bahamas. While they did not have any official Rotary duties on their first day, Rotarians gave them a warm “Caymankind” welcome and they were invited to a reception on a visiting Royal Navy ship.
The second day of their visit was memorable not for the day packed with Rotary activities but for the day-long island-wide power cut which the DG and his wife said made them feel very much at home!
The first activity was a tour of Rotary projects and they were joined on the bus by AG Eric and representatives of the Rotary and Rotaract Clubs on Grand Cayman. Fortunately the bus left from the Ritz-Carlton and everyone was able to get their morning caffeine fix as the Ritz-Carlton had coffee despite the power outage.
The tour included an “I Spy The Rotary Central Bus Stop” game, and visits to the Bonaventure Home and Meals on Wheels where the DG and his wife collected a meal for delivery to an elderly resident. Additional stops were the UCCI Observatory and the Pines Retirement Home where several Rotarians got together for an impromptu rendition of “Happy Birthday” in honour of a resident who was turning 103 years young the following day. Various parks sponsored by the Clubs were visited included the Cecile Crighton park in Spotts and the Palm Dale park where the group stopped for a picnic lunch of curry chicken and oxtail prepared by the cooks at the Pines.

riday evening was a joint-club meeting, under the tent at Grand Old House, chaired by five Presidents at which DG Felix was the guest speaker. Despite the distant rumbles of thunder and flashes of lightning the weather remained dry. At the event a new member was inducted by the DG into Rotaract Blue, Sunrise Rotarian Niko Whittaker received his major donor pin from the Rotary Foundation (meaning he has donated over $10,000 to the Foundation) and AG Eric officially received his Assistant Governor pin. Rotaract President Matthew Seales presented DG Felix and his wife with a gift from the five clubs of a featuring five scenes of Cayman handcrafted in silver.
Saturday morning was a day for Board meetings and the Boards of Sunrise and the Rotaract Club of Grand Cayman presented their plans for the year ahead at a joint Board meeting which started at 10am in the board room at Governor's Square.
The official visit concluded on Saturday evening with a farewell cocktail and dinner at the home of PP AL Thompson and his wife Melissa. One of the highlights of the night was Director Anthony Lawson and AG Eric carving a suckling pig roasted by the chefs at Agua. The menu also included Cayman style beef, BBQ chicken and stew fish amoung other delicious items.
The DG and his wife departed on Sunday afternoon and will return in January for the visit of RI President Ravi and the celebration of 50 years of Rotary in the Cayman Islands.
