The New Year is here and I would like to wish you and your family a blessed, peaceful and prosperous 2015!!
As we bid good-bye to the old and tired 2014 we are left with only memories of the year that was. We now welcome in a brand new 2015 and look forward to an even better year in our personal, professional and public life.
I would like to commend all of you for the time and effort in attending our regular weekly meetings, committee meetings, board meetings and community projects (local and international) in 2014. We have done good work so I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
But hang on to your hats!!! The first six months of 2015 will be jam packed with fund raising activities like Casino Night, the Car Raffle and Dining with Divas. Add this into our already busy schedule for Literacy, Community, Youth and International and we'll certainly need all hands on deck. I look forward to your continued support as we enter 2015 and light up Rotary Sunrise.

New Year Message from Rotary International

At the beginning of this Rotary year, I asked Rotarians everywhere to Light Up Rotary by holding a Rotary Day. How you do this is something I'm leaving up to you: It can be a full day or just a few hours. It can be organized by your club, by your district, or even across your entire country. It can be a service project, a festival, or any kind of event you want. As long as it's open to the community, embraces the whole family of Rotary, and is fun, it's a Rotary Day.
The goal of a Rotary Day is to shine a light on Rotary. For many years, we in Rotary felt that it wasn't appropriate to boast about our good work. We felt it was best to serve quietly and let our work speak for itself. But today, in many communities, people aren't even aware that they have a local Rotary club. Not because the clubs aren't strong, or because they aren't serving well. They are. But if Rotarians don't talk about their work, people will never know about it.
It is time for us to Light Up Rotary and let people know what we are doing. In the first half of this Rotary year, I've been thrilled to see how many Rotarians have taken up my Rotary Day challenge. I've attended Rotary Days in so many places, including the Philippines, Korea, China, the United States, Turkey, India, Taiwan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. Every one has been different, and every one has met the challenge to Light Up Rotary in its own way.
If you've organized a Rotary Day in your community, tell us about it: Email details and photos of your event to rotarian@rotary.org, with "Rotary Day" as your subject line. We'll do our best to feature as many Rotary Days as possible in the coming months.
And if you haven't planned a Rotary Day yet, why not? It's a great way to share your love for Rotary with your community. When we tell others about Rotary and let them know how membership can enrich their lives, we share a gift that was given to us when we were invited to join our clubs. By passing that gift on, we help ensure that Rotary, and its service, will endure for generations to come.

Donation to Guatemalan Students

In late 2014, International Service made a $1,000 donation to a literacy project in Guatemala to sponsor a computer workstation for the Cooperative for Education program.

The Cooperative for Education creates sustainable textbook, computer center, reading and scholarship programs in Guatemala. Instead of the children being sent to another country with the hopes of completing an education, this program allows them to stay in their home town.
By keeping Guatemalan children in school, you give them the tools they need to succeed in life.
You create a future reality where staying in school is a more viable alternative than risking everything for the vague possibility of financially helping one’s family.
You give them hope.
You can help educate children in Guatemala desperate for an opportunity.
You can make that opportunity a school book instead of a bus headed nowhere. Education is the only way these children will ever know Guatemala as a safe, warm, happy home. Education is their opportunity for a better life.
Laura Ingalls Wilder once wrote, “Home is the nicest word there is”. Wouldn’t it be extraordinary if every child in Guatemala knew this to be true?

Rotary Grand Cayman DocuFest Film Festival

Rotary Club of Grand Cayman will be hosting a PEACE and CONFLICT RESOLUTION film festival this Thursday, January 8that the Camana Bay Cinemas. We are basically showing 4 films total which each run about 50 minutes. 2 films will be shown back to back at 4:30 pm, then there will be a break where you can meet the producers at Abacus, and the second 2 films will be shown at 7:30 pm. The films all focus on conflict resolution, namely the IRA in Northern Ireland, South Africa’s Apartheid, the Mafia in Sicily, and the Berlin Wall. The 2 producers who are flying down are both professors at Boston College, and these films are included in their curriculum.
Tickets are printed and we are charging $25/each showing (so $50 total if you want to watch all 4 films). There is a limited number of tickets due to the capacity of the cinema, so there are 180 tickets for each show, and a ticket includes a complimentary glass of wine at Abacus during the break.
Please consider purchasing tickets in support of the club and offer them to any of your contacts/colleagues who might be interested.
We only have a very short window in which to sell these tickets and pull this event off, so your support is desperately needed.

The Butterfly Storybook Winners

A big thanks to all of you for your help and support with the Butterfly Storybook competition. It would have been impossible to pull this off without help from all of you. There were 103 entries from 8 schools.

The students will be honoured at our club meeting on Wednesday, January 14th. The winners and their parents will be invited to come to the meeting and read their wining story to the club. These 3 stories have also been submitted to the E7020 Club for the district competition. March is Rotary Literacy Month and we will hand out certificates to all the participants at that time.

The e-Club website is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You just need to spend a minimum of 30 minutes on the site and answer some questions to get the make up certificate.
