The Rotary Grace

O God and giver
of all good,

We thank thee for
our daily food.

May Rotary friends
and Rotary ways,

Help us to serve thee
all our days.
The 4-Way Test

Of the things we
think, say, or do:

Is it the truth?

Is it fair to all concerned?

Will it build goodwill
and better friendships?

Will it be beneficial
to all concerned?
What is the Red Badge Checklist?
Rotary Sunrise has developed a list of tasks to be completed by newly inducted members as a way to help them get to know other members in the club and become familiar with Rotary protocols. Once all 7 required tasks have been completed the member will receive the club's Blue Badge replacing the Red Badge to symbolize the completion of all tasks.
  1. Be Greeter
  2. Four Way Test
  3. Complete New Member Training Session
  4. Getting to Know You Talk
  5. Prepare bio for publication in the Sun
  6. Do a make-up at another club (locally or internationally)
  7. Update your profile on the web-site
There are also 11 optional tasks but the 7 listed above are mandatory and it is suggested to aim at completing the list within a 6 month period (but that is only a suggestion). For more information about the Red Badge Checklist or any new member information please visit our website home page under "For New Members" on the menu bar.

Ordering Breakfast on Wednesday?

Due to the GT Yacht Club now open to the public for breakfast, Club Members are being asked to place their breakfast orders with the wait staff at the register by the coffee station. This will not only speed the ordering process but you will receive your meal faster. In addition, if the water jug at your table needs a refill, kindly have someone bring it to the coffee station for a top up.

The management of GTYC thanks you for your assistance

Rotary Sunrise Supports Blood Donors

June is
Rotary Fellowships Month
(worldwide)
Blood Donor Day - Sat., June 14
Submitted by Director Gina, Community Service Event

Giving blood is one of the most selfless things you can do for another human being. And on Saturday, June 14 we saw just that as a number of new donors came out to sign up, give blood and others simply to support the efforts of the Blood Services. The staff from the Health Services Authority were overjoyed with the number of new registrants to the system and the media coverage that they were getting in addition to the Rotary club support from all the local clubs. Tune into Cayman 27's evening news on Monday to see more on the successful event.

Everyone has different reasons for giving blood (if they are eligible) and what ever that reason is the recipient who needs blood is thankful that you did. It was truly heart-warming as I saw Rotarians and Rotaractors show up on Saturday to sign up and give blood as it shows how much our members care.

The Blood Services will be looking to launch a facebook page soon to get into the social media circle and encourage young donors to start early to make giving blood a part of your life every 8 weeks. Starting on July 5, the Blood Bank is making it even more convenient for donors to give as they will be open on Saturdays for blood donations. Call the blood bank today to make your next appointment 244-2669 or 244-2674.

It's so hard to say farewell.

One of the privileges I have as President of Rotary Sunrise is the ability to review Rotary International's membership roster for our club. So, I'm taking this time as the end of the current Rotary year draws to a close to bid farewell to the members who have left our club since July 1st of 2013.

Betsy Kelly, 6 August, 2013
Simon Watson, 7 September, 2013
Lloyd McBean, 12 November, 2013
Mellisa Hudell, 12 November, 2013
Raquel Solomon, 27 November, 2013
Adrean Russell, 16 February, 2013
Gregory Brooks, 16 February, 2013

I have also recently received transfer requests from Rotarian Nigel Twohey and from District Secretary and Past President Rosie Twohey. Both are switching to the Mother Club (RCGC) and although it's painful to see them leave Sunrise, we know that they are following their hearts and we certainly are grateful that they will remain within the Family of Rotary in the Cayman Islands. Our doors will always be open to welcome them warmly as visiting Rotarians and Past Sunrisers.

Two other Sunrise members, Rotarian Chris Anco and Past Secretary Ciara Aspinall are considering transfers into the District 7020 E-Club of the Caribbean due to distance and time challenges. The E-Club is absolutely delightful, with 24/7/365 online meetings and a weekly "live" Happy Hour Hangout every Saturday morning. Rotarians Chris and Ciara will be in excellent company as members of the E-Club with such District luminaries as that club's President Kitty Bucsko and PDG Diana White.

If you haven't checked out the E-Club and you find yourself needing a make-up, just go to:

But this Rotary year hasn't been entirely devoted to fond farewells. We also have been blessed with a host of energized and eager newcomers to the Sunrise family. So three cheers for our newest Sunrisers!

Victor Crumbley, admitted 28 June, 2013
Dorothy Crumbley, admitted 28 June, 2013
Rachel Windhaber, admitted 2 April, 2014
Renzo Escalante, admitted 2 April, 2014

We also have several potential members waiting in the wings--some are transferring in from other clubs and some will be brand new Rotarians. But all will be part of an amazing club whose members have successfully weathered the storms that fate has tossed our way.

We are family. We are Sunrisers.

We engage Rotary. We change lives.

And we ARE making the world a better place.

What could be better than that?

This Week's Meeting Topic: Interactive Committees Meeting

"Getting to Know" Rotarian Rachael Windhaber
Submitted by Rotarian Racheal

I was born and brought up in Cornwall the southernmost county in England. My mother was a librarian and my father an engineer. Very sadly my father passed away from Multiple Sclerosis when I was 14 years old. Whilst at school and 6th form in Cornwall I volunteered in the St. John ambulance brigade and our local hospice. I obtained my Bachelors degree in therapeutic radiography from the University of Wales College of Medicine in Cardiff. During my time in Cardiff I met my husband and we have been married for 9 years this year.

After graduating from Cardiff I lived and worked as a radiographer in Bristol. I had always had a strong desire to be a dentist so in 2000 I applied for and won a place to study dentistry at Bristol University. I found the course very interesting and rewarding and was very delighted to graduate as a dentist in 2006.

My first job was as a vocational trainee dentist at the Fortuneswell Dental Practice on the Isle of Portland in Dorset. Following this foundation year I began working for the Primary Care Dental Service in the neighbouring county of Somerset. This job mainly involved working with patients who suffered from phobias or who had special needs. I undertook further training in the use of sedation to help provide dental care to this complex patient group. As the service developed I also became involved in prison dentistry and the national dental survey collecting data concerning the caries rates in school children.

I am a proud mother of 2 boys, Thomas born in February 2011 and Benjamin who will be 1 this July. Whilst living in Dorset I became a volunteer for the local branch of the National Child Birth Trust. This charity provides support for expectant and new parents within the local community.

In September last year we moved to Cayman. At present I am enjoying spending time with my children and relishing the freedoms that Cayman offers them. It is my hope to return to my career as a dentist soon and contribute further to the community through my involvement in Rotary.
Happy Father's Day!
To all our male members of the club, here's sending you a Happy post-Father's Day wish. And to all those male and female members who are Father-figures too, this wish is for you too. Hope you have a wonderful Sunday with your families.

Hannah Meeson - Declared Cancer Free
Submitted by Director Gina

Many of you will recall the overwhelming fundraising support over this past year for little 6 year old Hannah Meeson and her fight with childhood cancer. The Cayman community came out in full force to support Nigel and Gaylene Meeson in their campaign to fund raise and bring awareness to Childhood Cancer. We had both Nigel and Gayleen come in as guest speakers to talk to the club about the lack of funding that goes to Childhood Cancer research and how they set out on a personal mission for their daughter and other children who are battling cancer. Then shortly after in September we saw several Rotarians and Rotaractors step up to have their head shaved to support the fundraising cause. Within Sunrise was our very own PP Woody, PP Winston and IPP Tony (who still maintains his sleek cranial appearance to this day) go under the shaver to help support the cause.

On June 9, 2014, Cayman 27 did a news article on Hannah Meeson where she was declared cancer free after her last brain scan. This was such good news for the Meesons and for Childhood Cancer Awareness. If you missed the news clip just click here or on the photo of Hannah to see the news clip in full. As Hannah's story touched many of our lives and still do it was important to share this good news story with everyone incase you missed it.

If you'd like to see photos from last year's Head Shaving event you can find them in Rotary Sunrise's Picasa Photo Albums ...or just click here.
