Cayman Islands First Official Stop for DG Paul Brown
Submitted by Secretary Gina
With the new Rotary year comes a new District Governor for 7020, Paul Brown from Jamaica. As District Governor, DG Paul is expected to visit all 10 countries in District 7020 within his year and he is making the Cayman Islands his first official stop.
DG Paul Brown and wife Kay will be here from Monday, July 14 to Friday, July 18. During their visit they plan to meet with all 4 Rotary Clubs starting with Cayman Brac on Monday. Then on Tuesday, July 15 he will be back on Grand Cayman to sit with each of the club's Board of Directors for the special DG Board Meeting. As this official visit comes so early in the new year the board meetings typically allow the board of directors to discuss projects and events that has taken place. But as the year has only just begun Rotary Sunrise will be focusing on the goals and project plans set out by the board and chair members. As DG Paul is pushing all clubs to use the electronic reporting within the Rotary Club Central website he will be able to get up to date information about our club projects and goals any time he needs it.
Later on Tuesday, July 15 will be an evening cocktail to welcome DG Paul and Kay to the Cayman Islands. All members are invited to this cocktail and more information will be provided as the venue is confirmed.
Then on Wednesday, July 16, DG Paul and Kay along with Assistant Governor Eric Bush and all the Club Presidents will take an island tour of the Rotary Projects by all 3 clubs in addition to projects by the Rotaract Club of Grand Cayman and Rotaract Blue. This will be an all day tour and one of the stops expected is the newly repaired and cleaned up Spotts Newlands Community Park.
On Thursday, July 17 we will have a joint club meeting for all 3 Grand Cayman clubs from noon to 2pm at the Westin. All regular club meetings are to be cancelled that week so DG Paul can make his official club address to all club members. Please make plans to come to this special club lunch meeting on Thursday, July 16 instead of our Wednesday morning meeting.
Welcome DG Paul, "Light Up Rotary"!

President's Corner
Submitted by President Kim Remizowski
This year's RI President is Gary C.K. Huang and he was born and raised in Taiwan. If you were at Change Over or our first regular meeting you would have already heard me mention this year's theme of "Light Up Rotary". RI President Gary feels that by sharing our service, strengthening our clubs and letting our light shine in our communities, we will Light up Rotary this year.
RI President Gary is focusing on two main objectives; "to enhance membership" and to make history by "eradicating Polio".
On the membership side he wants all clubs to work hard to bring in new members while trying to keep the members we have. He has challenged all clubs to hold a "Rotary Day" to give our community a chance to learn more about Rotary. Remember that Rotary involves family so therefore encourage your spouse and other family members to consider joining. He wants us to investigate why members stay and why they leave our clubs. He wants to know what we can do to make being a Rotarian an appealing and attractive opportunity for busy professionals and those with young families.
With regards to eradicating polio, RI President Gary feels it's realistic to think that Rotary can eradicate this disease within the next few years and we have made significant financial contributions to date with the help of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Where else can we make our money work three times as hard? He is asking that we as Rotarians be an active part of the greatest public-private health partnership in the history of the world and share in the pride when the job is finished.
In 2014/2015, we will focus our efforts on President Gary's objectives and concentrate on Membership and Ending Polio but we also want to look at Fund Raising and Fellowship. Without raising funds within our community we will not be able to support the many projects that we have been supporting in the past or look at new ones. Let's give our undivided attention to PE/VP of Fund Raising Christine Mathews as she heads up this very important area of our club.
In addition, let's bring the fun back in Fellowship. Rotarian Dawn Cummings is chairing this committee and has a number of great ideas and events planned for the year. Let's show her our support her as we strengthen this critical element in our club.
In closing, let's Light Up Rotary in our community and therefore our commitment and our service will light up the world.
Yours in Rotary,
President Kim
Committee Selection Survey
Submitted by Secretary Gina
Recently Secretary Gina emailed a survey link to all Rotary Sunrise members. This survey should be completed by all members as soon as possible with a selection of first, second and third choices to which committee you have an interest in serving on this year. We are expecting every member to serve on at least one committee where you will be asked to lead a signature project, assist with a committee event, preform regular tasks and support the committee throughout the year to ensure all projects are successful.
You will have a choice between the 4 Service Projects Committees and the 5 Supportive Committees:
Literacy
Youth
Community
International
Fund Raising
Foundation
Membership
Communications & Public Image
Club Administration
Fellowship
To strengthen the club and ensure the responsibilities are shared by all committee members it is important to have all committee members dedicated to the committee of their choosing. The final committee selection process will take into consideration your 3 choices while at the same time ensuring there is an equal balance of members serving on the committees to support the projects anticipated throughout this Rotary year.
Thank you to those members who have already made their selection. If anyone has any questions or concerns about this survey please direct them to Secretary Gina.
Online Fundraising for Rotary Sunrise
Submitted by Secretary Gina
A new business initiative has recently launched in the Cayman Islands to purchase gift certificates online. At first look this seems like any normal business venture but there is an added benefit with this organization that will help non-profit organizations to fund raise. Cayman Gift Certificates felt they could help local charities to fund raise by offering the ability to receive donations from any where in the world through the world wide web. Cayman Gift Certificates have even gone the extra mile to ensure that 100% of the donation goes to the charity of choice by the donor. They are absorbing any transaction fees so all funds reach the charity in full.
When the Rotary Sunrise board heard of this new business and charitable opportunity, they took due diligence to ensure the funds were going to be secure and once satisfied with the process quickly moved to set up Rotary Sunrise as one of the charitable organizations within their partnership.
Your Club Admin Committee will be looking to secure Mr. Robert Hamaty, founder of Cayman Gift Certificates (and Tortuga), to come in as a guest speaker to the club at some point in the near future.
Excerpt from Cayman Gift Certificates website from the "Donate to Cayman Islands Charities" page: Cayman Gift Certificates™ is the only fast, secure and convenient way to donate to your favourite Cayman charities from anywhere in the world. We offer a free payment porthole, absorbing all processing fees as our way to give back to the community. This allows your favourite charity to receive 100% of your donation, guaranteed.
Cayman Gift Certificates™ in conjunction with Butterfield Bank (Cayman) and First Atlantic Commerce (FAC) work to bring you the very latest technology in risk management for credit and debit cards, making your transaction completely safe. All you have to do is pick your charity of choice, designate an amount and use a credit or debit card to pay. The charity is notified of your contribution and the money is sent to them within 14 business days. It’s that simple!
Our founder Mr. Robert Hamaty has taken these steps to assist our community’s organizations in receiving more funding and now it is your turn! Check out all of the great charities below that have joined Cayman Gift Certificates™ and let your mouse do the donating!
