Guest speaker at Rotary Science Fair

The Science Fair which is organised each year by Rotary Central will be held on April 2nd at the Arts & recreation centre at Camana Bay and organisers are expecting an even bigger turn out of students this year over last year's very successful event. "Having Courtney Platt as our guest speaker is a great addition for this year's event and we are confident that his presentation will be very well received by students with a strong interest in science" said Sandy Cram, Chairperson of the Rotary Central Science Fair Committee. Having minored in marine biology in California, Courtney Platt then taught scuba at Bob Soto's Diving from 1983-1986, during which time he made over 2,400 scuba dives and witnessed the last of our largest, friendly reef fish disappear. He then made over 2,500 dives as pilot of the deep subs diving to 1,000' between 1986 and 2004. This experience has given him an intimacy with Cayman's reefs shared by only a handful of people who have worked in our diving industry for many years. A seasoned professional photographer, Courtney has been photographing underwater since 1976 with 8 assignments for National Geographic Magazine among his credits. His topic for the evening will be: "25 years of Marine Parks Regulations… Why it Matters to All Caymanians…Why and How Everyone Must Help". Rotary Central has been busy contacting local schools, encouraging the broadest possible participation and there are now over 80 students signed up. Three prizes are awarded in five categories: 1) Earth Sciences, including the environment, weather, astronomy and ecology 2) Food and health 3) Life sciences, including microbiology, botany or zoology 4) Physics/chemistry 5) Computer Science Forms are available through all science teachers, schools and the science fair website – www.rotarysciencefair.ky
