News of one project which was supported by Rotary Central in 2008...

North Side Primary School would like to say a hige thank you to Rotary Central for their support in 2008 towards a new literacy project. In the photo you will see one of the children who is benefitting from the literacy bags that were created thanks to Rotary sponsorship. She made good use of the 'bug catcher' that was part of this pack on "Bugs" and took the butterfly she caught in to school for all to see - she talked knowledgeably about butterflies as a result of reading the books in the pack. The idea behind the bags is to encourage parents to get involved with reading and supporting their children to read for enjoyment and education. The backs, which are themed, come in a neat rucksack and included a story book, an informtaion book, a magazine for parents (to model reading and share their findings with their children) and a game or activity to extend the learning. Themes include sharks; volcanoes; ballet; bugs; fishing; dogs...and much more. The packs are in great demand and children take them home for several nights and bring them back once they have read the books and completed the activities. Miss Campbell, the literacy co-ordinator, is delighted with the response of both children and parents and sends a big, personal thank-you to Rotary for making the project possible.
