Worldwide some 793 million adults lack minimum literacy skills which means that about one in six adults is still not literate; 67.4 million children are out-of-school and many more attend irregularly or drop out.  The Cayman Islands also has a high level of illiteracy among both children and adults. As well as supporting literacy among children, Rotary Central is a strong supporter of Reading Aides which assists adults in all districts to be able to read and write on a one to one basis.  The program is also offered in the prisons.
