Rotary Central facilitated the attendance of two student representatives to the 33rd Annual World Affairs Seminar held at Carroll University, Waukesha, Wisconsin this summer. The community service club has been sponsoring students for over 10 years and covers all expenses including travel, accommodation, and meals in order for students to benefit from such an opportunity.
The conference which aims to educate and empower students to make a difference in their communities and beyond hosted over 1100 students representing some 50 countries. The program is a unique educational forum where some of the best and brightest high school students/future leaders can be introduced to some of the most perplexing global issues and problems of our time by high-caliber speakers renowned in their fields. "Rotary Central is proud to be able to have given this opportunity to local students for the last ten years. We are confident that these students come back with a greater understanding of the world and how global activities affect our shores; thus making them more equipped and ready to step-up to the plate of leadership in the future. The well rounded program also gives the students an opportunity to meet people from all over the world," said Rotary Central member, Mr. Martin Ruben. Previously students have been presented with such topics as human rights, nuclear arms control and disarmament, economics, environmental issues, global health, globalization, security and global leadership. This year's theme covered "The Global Freshwater Challenge". Students are also given the opportunity to be a part of small groups and learn about the cultures, opinions and aspirations of their fellow peers. The Club intends to send two students to the seminar again this year. Rotary Central President Mr Wil Pineau said that the club is always impressed with the presentation from students who have attended the World Affairs Seminar. "We have been doing this for over a decade and we are always so pleased with the students in terms of both their role as international youth ambassadors for the Cayman Islands at such a major event as well as the presentation that they make to our club members on their return, said Mr. Pineau.
