Transcript of DG Kathi Dick's speech
WELCOME TO THE YEAR OF ROTARY MAKING A DIFFERENCE.

IN A REMOTE MASSAI VILLAGE IN TANZANIA, AFRICA I WITNESSED WHAT MAKING A DIFFERENCE IS ABOUT. MY CLUB, ROTARY CAMBRIDGE NORTH, ALONG WITH ROTARY PRESTON HESPELER, MADE THE TRIP TO THIS VILLAGE IN LATE 2011.  WE HAD FUNDED AN AIDS PROJECT THERE AND WE WANTED TO SEE FIRST HAND HOW OUR MONEY WAS BEING PUT TO USE. THE WORK BEING DONE ON THIS PROJECT WAS OUTSTANDING, BUT THE THING I REMEMBER MOST ABOUT THIS VISIT WAS A LITTLE GIRL THAT I MET.

AS I WALKED THROUGH THIS LITTLE CLASSROOM, I CAME ACROSS A SMALL GIRL SITTING IN FRONT OF A PYRAMID TYPE STRUCTURE THAT SHE HAD JUST CREATED.  I BENT DOWN TO COMPLIMENT HER ON HER BEAUTIFUL CREATION AND TO ASK HER IF I COULD TAKE HER PHOTO. OF COURSE, SHE COULDN’T UNDERSTAND MY LANGUAGE BUT SHE UNDERSTOOD MY SMILE AND GESTURES.  HER FACE LIT UP WITH CHILD LIKE DELIGHT!   SHE WAS SO PROUD OF HER ACCOMPISHMENT.  I TOOK A PHOTO OF THAT LITTLE GIRL AND THAT PHOTO IS FOREVER ETCHED IN MY HEART.

LET ME MOVE FORWARD WITH PRESIDENT IAN RISELEYS MESSAGE AND GIVE YOU AN UPDATE ON WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE DISTRICT.  ROTARY INTERNATIONAL GOALS THIS COMING YEAR ALIGN WITH THEIR STRATEGIC PLAN AND ALSO ALIGN WITH OUR PLANS FOR OUR DISTRICT THIS YEAR. THEY ARE:
  1. TO SUPPORT AND STRENGTHEN CLUBS
  2. FOCUS AND INCREASE HUMANITARIAN SERVICE
  3. ENHANCE PUBLIC IMAGE AND AWARENESS.

I KNOW THE HARD WORK AND DEDICATION EACH OF YOU HAS PUT IN TO MAKING YOUR CLUB THE SUCCESS THAT IT IS. HOW CAN THE DISTRICT HELP TO SUPPORT AND STRENGTHEN YOUR CLUB? WE CAN HELP BY GIVING YOU THE TOOLS TO MAKE YOU SUCCESSFUL.

WE ARE DEVELOPING A NEW STRATEGIC PLAN FOR THE DISTRICT BASED ON A DISTRICT VISIONING EXERCISE DONE IN DECEMBER LAST YEAR, AND A DISTRICT WIDE SURVEY CONDUCTED RECENTLY.  WE ARE CURRENTLY WORKING DILIGENTLY ON THIS AND THE WAY THINGS ARE GOING WE SHOULD HAVE THIS IN YOUR HANDS BEFORE THE END OF 2017. THE DISTRICT IS ALSO UPDATING THE MANUAL OF POLICIES AND PROCEDURES TO KEEP IT CURRENT AND RELEVANT. WE WILL CONTINUE TO PROVIDE YOU WITH THE RECOURCES ON TOPICS AND ISSUES WE GATHER THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.

ERNIE GINSLER FROM ROTARY KITCHENER IS OUR LEAD ON DEVELOPING A ROTARY PEACE CENTRE IN WATERLOO.  THE LONGTERM GOAL IS TO HAVE ROTARY INTERNATIONAL NAME A PEACE CENTRE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO. THE SHORT TERM GOALS ARE TO SHOW ROTARY INTERNATIONAL THAT THIS DISTRICT SUPPORTS PEACE AND WILL SUPPORT A PEACE CENTRE. DEVELOPING A ROTARY PEACE CENTRE WITHOUT THE NAME ROTARY IS A NEW MODEL FOR ROTARY PEACE CENTRES AND WILL PROVIDE THE OPPORTUITY FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO BALSILLIE SCHOOL OF INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS AND CONRAD GREBEL MASTERS DEGREE STUDENTS TO OBTAIN A DIPLOMA IN 9 MASTERS PROGRAMS. STUDENTS CAN ENROLE FOR THIS NEW PROGRAM FOR THE 2018 ACADEMIC YEAR.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL HAS PROMISED TO GREATLY IMPROVE ON LINE TOOLS, SUCH AS A REFRESHED ROTARY.ORG., A SIMPLIFIED ROTARY FOUNDATION GRANT PROCESS, IMPROVED MY ROTARY EXPERIENCE AND A REBUILT ROTARY CLUB CENTRAL THAT WILL BE FASTER, EASIER TO USE AND MOBILE FRIENDLY. THE BRAND NEW ROTARY CLUB CENTRAL IS UP AND RUNNING AND IS A MORE USER FRIENDLY VERSION THAT I THINK YOU WILL LIKE!

MY FOCUS ON MEMBERSHIP THIS YEAR WILL BE ON NEWER MEMBERS OF 2 YEARS OR LESS.  WE DO QUITE WELL AT BRINGING IN NEW MEMBERS, BUT WE NEED A HAND AT KEEPING THEM.  ONE PARTICULAR CLUB IN OUR DISTRICT HAS INDUCTED 6 MEMBERS OVER THE PAST 24 MONTHS AND TODAY ONLY ONE REMAINS IN THE CLUB.  LET’S FOCUS ON MENTORING AND ENGAGING THESE ROTARIANS.   WE CAN DIRECT YOU TO THE RESCOURCES THAT WILL HELP YOU IN THISES AREAS.

THE DISTRICT CONFERENCE IS AN EXAMPLE OF HOW WE CAN ENGAGE AND EDUCATE NEW MEMBERS, THAT IS WHY WE HAVE MADE IT FREE OF CHARGE FOR THEM TO ATTEND IF THEY REGISTERED PRIOR TO JULY 31ST.  THERE THEY CAN LEARN ABOUT ROTARY AND MEET OTHER ROTARIANS.   THIS WAS TIMOTHY’S EXPERIENCE WHEN HE FIRST JOINED ROTARY 38 YEARS AGO. WHEN HE WAS A NEW MEMBER AT ROTARY WINNIPEG IN 1979 NEW MEMBERS, AS PART OF THEIR MENTORING PROGRAM HAD TO COMPLETE 3 TASKS, ONE OF WHICH WAS TO ATTEND A DISTRICT CONFERENCE, AND HE WILL TELL YOU THAT THIS IS WHERE HE LEARNED WHAT ROTARY IS REALLY ABOUT AND THE REASON WHY HE HAS REMAINED A ROTARIAN ALL THESE YEARS.

I HAVE STARTED A NEW WAY TO COMMUNICATE WITH YOU THIS YEAR, BY WAY OF A MONTHLY VIDEO. WE ARE WORKING NOW ON THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE. WE WILL IMPROVE AS WE MOVE FORWARD.

TO FOCUS AND INCREASE HUMANITARIAN SERVICE, WE MUST FOCUS ON SUSTAINABILITY IN ALL THAT WE DO. THE 6 AREAS OF FOCUS ALL HAVE SUSTAINABILITY AT THEIR CORE. ERADICATING POLIO IS THE ULTIMATE IN SUSTAINABLE SERVICE.  WE ARE NOT WORKING TO CONTAIN IT.  WE ARE WORKING TO END IT.  IT MUST REMAIN OUR PRIORITY UNTIL THE JOB IS DONE.  TO QUOTE PRESIDENT, IAN RESELEY, “WE HAVE COME MUCH TOO FAR TO FAIL AND WE WON'T’. AT THE ROTARY INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION IN ATLANTA IN JUNE, MARIE CLAUDE BIBEAU, MINSITER OF INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND FRANCOPHONE ANNOUNCED THAT CANADA HAS PLEDGED 100 MILLION DOLLARS (75 MILLION AMERICAN) TO HELP US IN, THIS, THE HOME STRETCH IN OUR FIGHT TO ERADICATE THIS DISEASE FROM THE WORLD. ALONG WITH THE BILL AND MELINDA GATES FOUNDATION’S 450 MILLION AND OTHER GOVERNMENTS AND DONORS, A TOTAL OF 1.2 BILLION U.S. DOLLARS HAS BEEN PLEDGED OVER THE NEXT 3 YEARS FOR POLIO ERADICATION. THIS IS THE COUNTDOWN TO HISTORY.  THE ONLY OTHER DESEASE THAT HAS BEEN ERADICATE FROM THE WORLD IS SMALL POX. WE MUST SOLDIER ON AND GET THE JOB DONE.

WHEN IT COMES TO GETTING OUR NAME OUT IN OUR COMMINUITIES AND THE WORLD, WE MUST BE MORE PRO ACTIVE. PRESIDENT IAN RISELELY HAS ASKED THAT WE ENTER 2 NUMBERS IN THE NEW IMPROVED ROTARY CLUB CENTRAL.  THE MONEY INVESTED IN CASH AND KIND AND THE NUMER OF HOURS PERFORMED IN ROTARY’S NAME FOR THE PROJECTS AND FUNDRAISERS OUR CLUBS ARE INVOLVED IN. JUST 2 NUMBERS. ROTARY INTERNATIONAL WILL AGGREGATE THESE NUMBERS SO THAT THEY CAN CONFIDENTLY PRESENT THEM TO THE PUBLIC AND OUR PARTNERS IN THEIR PUBLIC RELATIONS WORK, AND MEMBERSHIP MATERIALS.  THIS WILL ANSWER NOT ONLY WHAT ROTARY IS, BUT WHAT ROTARY DOES.

THE ENIRONMENT AFFECTS ALL OF US.  ANOTHER REQUEST FROM ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT IAN RISELY IS THAT EVERY ROTARIAN THROUGHOUT THE WORLD PLANT ONE TREE. THE RESULT OF THIS WILL BE FAR GREATER THAN THE ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFIT EACH OF THESE 1.2 MILLION TREES WILL BRING.  IT WILL NOT ONLY BENEFIT THE PEOPLE ON OUR PLANET.  IT WILL BENEFIT THE PLANET ITSELF ON WHICH WE ALL LIVE AND DEPEND.  WE WILL PLAN A DISTRICT WIDE TREE PLANTING WEEKEND FOR NEXT SPRING AND, WITH THE PUBLIC RELATIONS BUDGET, HELP YOU PROMOTE IT IN YOUR COMMUNITY. MOST CITIES ARE HAPPY TO SUPPLY YOU WITH THE TREES AND THE LOCATION THEY WOULD LIKE TO SEE THEM PLANTED. WHAT A GREAT HANDS ON WAY TO INVOLVE YOUR COMMUNITY, FAMILY AND FRIENDS AND ATTRACT NEW PEOPLE TO ROTARY.   OUR GLOBAL IMPACT IS OUTSTANDING AND WE WILL PROMOTE THIS MORE THAN EVER, BUT THE COMMUNITY IS WHERE IT STARTS.

THINK GLOBALLY! ACT LOCALLY!

THE ROTARY FOUNDATION IS UNIQUE, IT ADDRESSES ALL OF THE GREATEST EDUCATIONAL AND HUMANITARIAN NEEDS. ITS WORLD REACH IS GREATER THAN THE UNTIED NATIONS, WE CAN GO WHERE POLITICIANS AND RELIGIOUS GROUPS CANNOT! THE ROTARY FOUNDATION IS YOUR FOUNDATION! YOUR DONATIONS GO TOWARD MAKING A DIFFERENCE HERE IN YOUR COMMUNITY AND THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. THE ROTARY FOUNDATION HAS RECEIVED THE HIGHEST POSSIBLE SCORE FROM CHARITY NAVIGATOR IN THE U.S. IT CONSISTENTLY RECIEVES A 4 STAR RATING, WHICH MEANS THAT THE FOUNDATION EXCEEDS INDUSTRY STANDARDS AND OUT PERFORMS MOST CHARITIES ON OUR AREA OF WORK. THIS SETS US APART FROM OUR PEERS AND DEMONSTRATES TO THE PUBLIC ITS TRUSTWORTHINESS. THE ROTARY FOUNDATION (CANADA) IS A CANADIAN FEDERALLY CHARTERED CORPORATION AND A CANADIAN REGISTERED CHARITY SUPPORTED SOLELY BY VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTIONS FROM ROTARIANS AND FRIENDS OF THE ROTARY FOUNDATION WHO SHARE ITS VISION OF A BETTER WORLD.

THE PRESIDENTIAL CITATION: THIS IS A CITATION FROM THE ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT. THE TWO REQUIRED ACTIVITIES ARE.
  • PAY YOUR 2017 AND JANUARY 2018 CLUB INVOICE ON TIME
  • REPORT VOLUNTEER HOURS AND SERVICE PROJECT CONTRIBUTIOS IN ROTARY CLUB CENTRAL.

THIS ALLOWS ROTARY INTERNATIONAL TO MEASURE AND PUBICIZE ROTARY’S IMPACT AROUND THE WORLD!

THE PRESIDENTIAL CITATION IS NOT NECESSSARILY COMPLETED TO WIN AN AWARD. IT CAN SERVE AS A GUIDLINE AND PLAN FOR YOUR CLUBS ACCOMPLISHMENTS FOR THE YEAR. IF YOU CAN FOLLOW AND IMPLEMENT THIS GUIDE, YOU WILL EASILY BE AWARDED A PRESIDENTIAL CITATION FOR YOUR CLUB.

ON SEPTEMBER 23RD WE WILL BE HOLDING OUR DISTRICT CONFERENCE “PEACE THROUGH MUSIC”.  THIS IS A ONE DAY EVENT AT THE LIVING ARTS CENTRE IN MISSISSAUGA.  IT WILL BE A DAY OF MUSIC, STORIES OF PEACE, FELLOWSHIP AND FUN.  IT IS A FAMILY DAY, SO BE SURE TO REGISTER NOT ONLY YOURSELF, BUT YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS AS WELL. FOR OUR HANDS- ON LITERACY PROJECT OVER LUNCH, WE ASK ALL ATTENDEES, IF THEY WISH, TO BRING A BEGINNER READER OR AN EASY TO READ PICTURE BOOK FOR CHILDREN AGED 6 TO 8.  WE WILL PACKAGE THESE BOOKS THAT WILL BE PICKED UP BY THE MISSISSAUGA LIBRARY TO GO TO OAKRIDGE PUBLIC SCHOOL FOR THE CHILDREN MOST IN NEED OF THEM. IN SAN DIEGO FOR MY DISTRICT GOVERNOR TRAINING, THEY HAD A PARTNER PROGRAM THAT TIMOTHY ATTENDED WHERE IAN RISELEY’S PARTNER, JULIETTE HELD A HANDS- ON LITERACY PROGRAM SIMILAR TO WHAT WE HAVE PLANNED.  WHEN WE MET HER AT THE INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION IN ATLANTA AND MENTIONED OUR PLAN, SHE WAS QUITE EXCITED AND TOLD US WE ARE THE ONLY DISTRICT TO TAKE THIS PROGRAM ON. REGISTRATION FOR THE CONFERENCE IS OPEN ON THE DISTRICT WEB SITE.  THE FEE IS ONLY $119.00 and $49.00 FOR ALL YOUTH.

I AM INVITING ALL OF YOU TO ATTEND OUR DISTRICT CONFERENCE ON SEPTEMBER 23RD.  IT WILL BE AN INSPIRING DAY FOR ALL WHERE WE CAN GATHER TOGETHER TO CELEBRATE WHY PEACE AND MUSIC ARE SUCH AN INTEGRAL PART OF OUR LIVES AND HOW THEY JOIN US TOGETHER AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN OUR WORLD!

THE ROTARY INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION WILL BE HELD IN TORONTO IN 2018.  WHAT A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU TO ATTEND AN INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION. I ATTENDED MY FIRST CONVENTION IN LISBON PORTUGAL, AS I WAS THE INCOMING PRESIDENT OF MY ROTARY CLUB AND INVOLVED MAINLY IN CLUB AND COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES. I REMEMBER SITTING IN THIS HUGE BUILDING, SIMILAR TO THE AIR CANADA CENTRE, AND LOOKING AROUND AT 30,000 ROTARIANS FROM THE WORLD OVER GATHERED IN ONE PLACE WITH ONE THING IN COMMON, TO DO GOOD IN THE WORLD. I REALIZED THEN AND THERE THAT I WAS PART OF A TRULY POWERFUL ORGANIZATION!

IT IS AT THIS CONVENTION THAT I SAW A YOUNG MAN CALLED EMMANUAL JAL, A CHILD SOLDIER, TALK ABOUT HIS EXPERIENCE IN SOUTH SUDAN.  HIS PRESENTATION WAS SO IMPACTFUL.  HE USED HIS RAP MUSIC TO TELL HIS STORY AS HE EXPLAINED IT WAS LESS PAINFUL. HE HAD THE ENTIRE STADIUM UP RAPPING WITH HIM WHICH WAS QUITEF A FEAT, CONSIDERING THE AVERAGE AGE OF THE CROWD. THERE WASN’T A DRY EYE WHEN HE WAS DONE.  THIS YOUNG MAN IS THE INSPIRATION FOR MY DISTRICT CONFERENCE PEACE THROUGH MUSIC.  EMMANUEL LIVES IN TORONTO AND I HAD THE GOOD FORTUNE TO MEET THIS REMARKABLE YOUNG MAN.

IN 2017-18 WE ROTARIANS WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE.  HOW YOU CHOOSE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IS YOUR CHOICE! WHAT WE KNOW IS THAT IT WILL TAKE TEAM WORK ON A GLOBAL SCALE TO MOVE ROTARY FORWARD AND SECURE ITS FUTURE. OUR YOUTH EXCHANGE PROGRAM IS A GREAT EXAMPLE OF HOW WE CAN PROMOTE WORLD PEACE AND UNDERSTANDING. LET’S FOSTER  AN ENVIRONMENT IN OUR DISTRICT OF CLUBS WORKING TOGETHER ON LARGE SUSTAINABLE PROJECTS THAT MAKE A BIG IMPACT THAT ENABLES US TO MAKE AN EVEN GREATER DIFFERENCE!

WE CAN DO MORE TOGETHER THAN WE CAN EVER HOPED TO DO ALONE!!

BACK TO THE SMALL VILLAGE IN TANZANIA NOW! THE LITTLE SCHOOL MADE OF TWIGS AND DIRT THAT WASHED AWAY EACH YEAR IN THE RAINY SEASON HAS BEEN REPLACED BY A BRICK SCHOOL FUNDED BY ROTARIANS IN THESE CLUBS. THAT DEAR CHILD WITH THE RADIANT SMILE SITTING IN THE MONTESSORY CLASSROOM IS A LITTLE GIRL WHO WILL LEARN TO READ AND TO WRITE. WE ROTARIANS HAVE TOUCHED THIS LITTLE GIRL IN A VERY SPECIAL WAY.  SHE IS A GIRL! SHE IS IN AFRICA! SHE WILL BE EDUCATED AND BECAUSE OF THAT SHE WILL TOUCH OTHERS IN HER LIFE AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR THEM!

THIS IS WHAT WE DO!
WE MAKE A DIFFERNCE IN THE LIVES OF THOSE WHO NEED IT MOST.
WE WORK TOGETHER WITH ONE THING IN COMMON
'SERVICE ABOVE SELF’ .   THE THREE GREATEST WORDS EVER!!

THANK YOU FOR LISTENING TODAY. LET’S MOVE FORWARD, ROLL UP OUR ROTARY SLEEVES, HAVE SOME FUN AND MOST OF ALL MAKE A DIFFERNCE!!

Past Business Discussion (from July 10)
  1. Wayne Bricknell discussed the race results and how the opportunity to work with other clubs, like the Rotary Club of Guelph, had changed his outlook. The city sees us as only Rotary, yet it is the clubs themselves that create the separations. We need to work more collaboratively with all the clubs and should look for some common projects. Wayne announced that this year’s Duck Race approached $41,000 in net cash. Final accounting TBD
    1. It was suggested that a note thanking our corporate sponsors be created to show our gratitude and where moneys will be going
    2. It was also noted that having our charities take part in selling was a huge success. It was motioned and carried that we round up to the nearest ‘$100, when setting the amounts given
    3. Dwayne M. asked that only 1 cheque be issued to ease accounting and licensing issues
President’s Address (From July 10)
  1. Mike thanked Frank Scott for his efforts this past year and providing Mike the opportunity to serve. He also thanked Frank for pushing and ensuring he received the required training. Mike had a few key messages:
    1. Membership
      1. We are experiencing a decline in membership. To remain a vibrant club we should look at ways to diversify our base. He suggested that our reputation within the city is an older men’s club , which we need to change
        1. Younger members
        2. More female members
        3. Diversify
    2. Special Projects Committee
      1. Mike thanked Frank Scott again for his & Frank McCowan’s leadership on the Special Projects Committee.
        1. Mandate was to streamline the committee structure and update the bylaws
        2. Mike’s goal is to implement these changes
    3. Duck Race
      1. Mike also wanted to push the Duck Race to new heights. He felt that:
        1. Corporate donations were a success
        2. Expansion to include the charities was a success we need to keep going
        3. Continue to expand
