The government's plans for the Immigration Department
 
On the 25th September 2008, Minister Branville McCartney spoke to the Nassau Sunrise regarding the government's plans for the Immigration Department, which includes: (a) The regularization of the status of long-time residents and the registration of children born abroad to Bahamian married women, (b) The introduction of minimum processing periods, (c) Reorganize and bring order to the Immigration Department, (d) Articulate and implement a medium to long term immigration policy, providing for timely, transparent and expeditious application processes, and (e) Ensure the enforcement of immigration laws without fear or favor. McCartney emphasized that it was his Department's intention to have all backlogged work permits, spousal permits, renewals, permanent residency, and citizenship applications determined by the end of this year. Additionally, the Minister stated that apprehension exercises are ongoing and continuous. He stressed that the cooperation of the public is crucial! Indeed, the Minister acknowledged the devastation in our neighboring countries - Haiti, Cuba, Turks & Caicos and our own Inagua and Mayaguana. He stated that The Bahamas is very fortunate and that there is much to be thankful to God for."
