Richard Spurlock, is working with the IHCA (International Hobie Cat Association) to bring this major sailing event to the Bahamas. In addition, he is working with private donors to introduce competitive sailing to underprivileged children here in the Bahamas. This is going to be a privately funded foundation relying solely on private contributions. The funding for this foundation will be utilized to supply equipment training, provide financial assistance to these children so that they will be able to compete on a world-class level all over the world. The IHCA expects over 1,000 racers from over 100 different countries, and they will leave at least 10 boats in the Bahamas to train local children so that Bahamians can be represented at world events. They expect the event to be in October of 2010, and it will be a 16 day race. What's interesting about this race is that the boast are manufactured, and brought to the racing location in time for the race, so the first time the racers see and are able to use the boats is on the day of the race itself, so that everyone starts off with the same sailing equipment, and hence the race is a test of skill. Rotarians will be solicited to assist in sourcing talented underprivileged children between the ages of 8 and 10.
