"There's talk of solar power being illegal in the Bahamas...but according to BEC's Electricity Act, Section 16, no person, where energy is available in Nassau, is to generate more than 250 kilowatts of energy.  Six (6) kilowatts run a house", said Elton Smith, President & CEO of Wind Sun Water Co. Ltd. (left in photo with Rotarian Christina Rolle).

Mr. Smith described Wind Sun Water Company Limited as one that focuses on alternative energy and bio-energy, but more so as an alternative technical company that specializes in new ways of saving money through energy consumption, and views it as a way to change the environment and the earth.  Some examples of alternative energy are: solar photovoltaic power, solar heating, wind power, airsource pool heating, ionic water sanitation, and energy saving devices.  Samples of energy efficient bulbs were passed around for Rotarians to examine.  Some of the lights last around 75,000 hours and are guaranteed to last for that lifetime.

They provide in-home energy audits, and some of their products have warranties for up to 25 years.  Their systems are linked to digital monitors that enable you to view your energy savings from your kitchen table.  It is also connected to the Internet, so that the company can keep track of the system, and should there be an issue, they can work on resolving it remotely.

The alternative energy system works by creating your own grid, similar to BEC's, to provide your home or business with energy.  With this grid, you can supplement the energy that is received from BEC, or replace it entirely.  The company is certified by the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP - www.nabcep.org), and they were able to get the Bahamas to be a pioneer in the region by being able to provide certifications for other Caribbean countries, so instead of going to New York to have this done, they can have it done through the Bahamas.

LED mast headlights will save BEC roughly more than 20 Megawatts of power every night!  Currently, BEC has about 35,000 streetlights.  For three types of streetlights that BEC uses, the following is the LED equivalent of energy used, and the energy consumption reduction.

1. BEC Streetlight: 450 Watts
    LED Equivalent:  168 Watts
    Energy Consumption Reduction: 62.27%

2. BEC Streetlight: 250 Watts
    LED Equivalent:  112 Watts
    Energy Consumption Reduction: 55.2%

3. BEC Streetlight: 150 Watts
    LED Equivalent:   56 Watts
    Energy Consumption Reduction: 62.67%
