The Rotary Club of Nassau Sunrise 4th Annual Reading Fair held March 13, 2010. More than 200 students from primary schools in the Bain and Grants Town areas were in attendance. The event began at 10:30 am with a prayer by the 2009 student winner and the singing of the National Anthem by Ms. Monesha Bowleg of Jordan Prince Williams School. President Carla Stubbs gave the welcome remarks and introduced the platform guests who included the Minister of Education Desmond Bannister, U.S. Ambassador Nicole Avant, Assistant Governor Felix Stubbs and President Elect Karen Pinder. U.S. Ambassador Avant spoke to the children about the importance of knowing how to read and how it can expand ones vocabulary and can stimulate your imagination. Minister of Education Desmond Bannister echoed the same sentiments and encouraged the children to read as many books as possible before declaring the Reading Fair officially opened. M.Cs for the event were Rotarian Ethan Quant and Ms. Sharnique Miller who advised the children participating about the rules and got them excited about the program to come. The children were then read a number of stories by local celebrities and other persons. Then it was time for lunch, games such as hoopla and scrabble, face painting and the appearance of the children cartoon characters such as Dora the Explora. The children had a blast! The afternoon ended with President Carla Stubbs announcing the winning school i.e Mable Walker Primary as the new champions.
