CLUB MINUTES: AUGUST 5, 2008

Today's meeting was held at the ABC Family Restaurant.  Sukh gave a classification talk and we reviewed Oktoberfest progress.

SUKH GILL

Sukh was born in the Punjab, India in 1962 and came to Canada (Vancouver) in 1969.  In 1970 he and his family moved to Savona where his father (a teacher in India) had found work in the sawmill.  In grade 7 they moved to Kamloops.  His first job was at the Commodore, washing dishes in the wee hours of the morning . . . he was 12!  Sukh graduated from NKSS in 1980, went to Cariboo College and then on to SFU to complete his business degree, finishing up his Chartered Accountant designation 3 years later.  He worked for Price Waterhouse in Kamloops and the City of Merritt before landing his current job as Director of Finance for the TNRD (1999 to date).   He has a large and close family in BC: his brother is a pharmacist in Kamloops and his sister is an accountant in North Vancouver.

Sukh is married to Lucky - 19 years on August 6!  Congratulations!  They have 3 daughters: 16, 14, and 7 years of age.     Thank you, Sukh, for sharing with us.

OKTOBERFEST UPDATE

Our goal is to sell out: 435 tickets (approx $55 / ticket).  This includes an authentic Bavarian dinner, a souvenir mug and program, and 3 beer tasting tickets.  Randy has one quote in for printing costs for tickets, programs and posters; waiting on another 2.

The fundraising letter will be available at the next meeting.  This letter will introduce the Oktoberfest as our fundraiser towards community projects and Polio Plus.  Ask Marilyn for several copies of this letter and see what we can bring in for the basket draw!

HOCKEY POOL UPDATE

Menzies is printing the tickets; Mike will have them within 10 days and we'll begin the sales!

CHRISTMAS PARTY

4 of 5 Kamloops Rotary Clubs have joined forces for a December 12 Christmas Party at Colombo Lodge.  Plan for your groups now; tickets will be for public sale after a specified cut-off date for Rotary members and their guests.  More details to come at future meetings.

NEXT MEETING: TRU - Cheryl Christianson, dietician . .  bring a guest!
