Today, April 30, 2007: Lieutenant Tom Cremonte from the Sheriff's Department is speaking on "Jail Overcrowding and Road Patrol Issues."

Next Week, May 7: Kim Dane is program chair.

May 14: Rotary will meet at Howell High School for our Interact/Top Ten lunch.

Also, the Board meets on May 14.

Wine-Tasting Fundraiser: Congratulations to Jeanne Clum and Catherine Rea Dunning for the successful wine tasting party last Wednesday.  Yes, we raised some money for our coffers but as important we had a chance to talk with fellow Rotarians and spouses, along with many drop-ins. Just the social aspect was beneficial.   Moreover, we tasted some awfully good wine.  Main Street Rose was my favorite although Barb Barden thinks that this Rose has a particulary disgraceful past.

 


                         Helping the Children of Iraq

Dear Rotarians, as you know by now I have a very good friend who serves in Iraq with the Army's Delta Co. 2-35 INF Unit. His name is 1st Lt. Brandon Pender and he is an outstanding soldier and an even better man. You received a special eHoweller last week that had pictures and an urgent message. War creates many types of casualties and most are out of our control or most anyone's for that fact. In this case you can help stem the despair and pain of a small child from something that is very tragic and needs immediate attention. I am asking you make a $5.00 donation to get these children a little bit of help. Through Howell Rotary we are scheduling a drive for this Monday the 30th and have set a date of May 2nd to send out the care packages. Listed below are some items that could be sent.               Howell Rotary At The District Conference

Last Friday Jim Gilligan attended the District 6380 conference at the Kellog Center in E. Lansing and made the "How to Turn a Rotary Ship Around" presentation developed by Kim Dane. Howell Rotary is being noticed throughout the district or our continued membership growth and the enthusiasm at our meetings. Good job Howell Rotarians!    
 
                             Interesting Trivia

1.  If a statue in the park of a person on a horse, which has both front legs in the air, that person died in battle.  If the horse has one front leg in the air, the person died as a result of wounds received in battle.  If the horse has all four legs on the ground, the person died of natural causes.
2.  Only two people signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4th: John Hancock and Charles Thompson.  Most of the rest signed on August 2, but the last signature wasn't added until years later.
3.  Most boat owners name their boats. The most popular boat name is Obsession.

                     Can You Say "Come-Uppance"?

Judy Brenner, of Brookfield was working at the liquor store in Wolfeboro on Thursday when she thought a customer was trying to lift some liquor.

Brenner, who is 70 years old, went after the teen, discovered he had a half-gallon of whiskey under his jacket and helped detain him until the police arrived, she said.

"He didn't run, but he walked faster, so I picked up my pace," Brenner said. "I wasn't going to let him go; he didn't pay for that."
She sprinted 100 feet to catch up with the teen, then grabbed the bottle while others who joined in the chase grabbed the man, she said.

"I have no problem running fast," Brenner said. She has run 14 marathons and finished the Boston Marathon this month in just over five hours, placing sixth among the women in her age bracket.

"It was a little surprising, but it was a little encouraging too," said Officer Roger Martel, adding that residents should not normally try to apprehend people themselves.

The suspect was charged with theft and unlawful possession of alcohol by a minor.
