Polio Plus Report From PDG Merle

Greetings Fellow Rotarians,

In the 20 years of our war on the polio virus,  Rotary has gone into 200 countries with 20 million workers, has immunized over 2 billion children, and has contributed $650,000,000. So reported Bob Scott, chairman of the International Polio Plus Committee at the recent Zones 22, 27 and 28 Institute at Niagara Falls, ON.
Disappointing is the fact that the war is NOT over. Recently we have experienced real problems in Nigeria, India, Afghanistan and Pakistan.  In fact, Nigeria , at present has 800 cases with more coming in each day----Nigeria is having an epidemic.
India is reporting 300 new cases with more daily. Pakistan and Afghanistan have 26.
Other African and Indian countries are seeing cases from imported virus...new cases are as close as an airplane ride! Anywhere! We MUST keep the children in polio free countries immunized--including those in our own country.
Dr. Scott emphasized that 20 years ago we made a promise  to the children of the world.  We must not stop now. We MUST eradicate the polio virus.  In partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), the Center for Disease Control (CDC),UNICEF, and , most importantly, the governments of the world, ROTARY CAN DO IT. But, he pointed out---it will cost another 5-10 million dollars!
Therefore, our clubs need to  continue to support the program with their contributions. They need to emphasize and highlight the role of Rotary in this fight  by scheduling Polio Plus  speakers and programs and maintaining the enthusiasm for victory.

   ROTARY CAN WIN!
   WE MUST WIN!
   WE WILL WIN!

Yours in Rotary Service,
RIO Merle
