Today, October 6, 2008: We will be deeply involved with the Tour de Livingston all meeting long. This is the week!!
Six days and counting until our first Tour de Livingston, it is so exciting
for the entire Howell Rotary Club.
And next weekend will be so much fun.
It is amazing all the press coverage we have received on this event. The United Way is a fantastic partner and we are off to a wonderful first Tour de Livingston. Let's hope for warm weather and sunny skies this coming Saturday.
Jim Reed officially retires from the Howell Fire Authority this week. Make sure you congratulate him and thank him for all he has done to keep our community safe during his tenure!
One month until the election and the end to all the advertising on television.
If you have the time, try to catch the Howell - Brighton football game this coming Friday. This is a tough rivally. Milt talks about the time when the police had to be there because of the possibility of violence - back in the 40's.
Dear fellow Rotarians,
When I was a child, Korea experienced a terrible war. After it was over, my
country received a great deal of help from other governments and humanitarian
organizations, help that put Korea on a track of health, hope, and economic
growth. In the decades since the war, both Korea's economy and its Rotary club
membership have grown enormously. I feel there are two reasons for this. One is
Koreans' desire to help others as we were once helped ourselves; we all want to
pay back some of what was given to us. The other is the natural affinity
Koreans have for the values of Rotary: integrity, honor, hard work, and
fairness. Many of Rotary's core values are also core values in Korean business.
Koreans know very well the lesson taught by Herbert J. Taylor, author of The
Four-Way Test: We do not succeed professionally despite our ethical behavior;
we succeed because of it.
When Korean businesses interview potential employees, they look for what we
call chim shin uro, or "pure heart." A person with a pure
heart is someone who has personal integrity, a person who treats others with
honor and respect and can always be counted on to do what's right. It is a
highly valued trait in companies, and it is equally important in Rotary. As
Rotarians, our integrity is what makes us successful in business, in service,
and in life. "Pure heart" is what we in Rotary call Service Above
Self.
Koreans also talk about work as chip an. Chip an means
"inside the house." It is a way to talk about how important our work
is to us, how our companies are like our families. Our businesses and the
people in them should be treated with respect, honor, and dignity because,
Koreans believe, good personal relationships are the basis for good business. We
in Rotary also believe that honest, open relationships with customers,
co-workers, and employees are important, as are our relationships with all our
fellow Rotarians and those we serve through Rotary.
True service gives us pure hearts when we bring it "inside the
house." This is the reality behind Service Above Self. This is the reality
of Rotary, the reality that inspires us and challenges us every day.

Dear Rotarians,
Within the
policies and procedures of District 6380, on or before October 31 of this year,
it is my responsibility to send the job description of the District Governor to
all clubs and invite clubs to submit names to the district's nominating
committee for consideration. Such names must be submitted in the form of a
resolution adopted at a regular meeting of the club, and certified by the club
secretary. The nominating committee is to receive the names by December 31. Very
soon thereafter, the nominating committee will begin the process of selecting a
District Governor Nominee designate who will serve as District Governor of
District 6380 in the 2011-2012 Rotary year.
I remind you that Judy Garver
of the Rotary Club of West Bloomfield will lead District 6380 as District
Governor in 2009-2010. Janet McPeek of the Rotary Club of Lake Orion will serve
as District Governor in 2010-2011. Now is the time we begin the process to
identify who among us will serve as District Governor for
2011-2012.
Please announce to the members in your clubs that nominations
for District Governor for 2011-2012 Rotary year are now being sought. Please
consider the qualifications which have been established by Rotary International
(see www.rotary.org). Please consider appropriate candidates from your club and
put forth names of those interested and worthy to serve our district as District
Governor 2011-2012. Please provide those sumbissions by resolution to District
Governor Stanley Sherman and I in turn will provide them directly to the
district's nominating committee.
Candidates are further encouraged to
review the Status, Qualifications, and Duties of Governor as prescribed in Part
One of the Manual of Procedure. Please also refer to Rotary District 6380's
Policies and Procedures of the District 3.3 to 3.4.9 outlined in the District
Directory for qualifications of a District Governor and the selection
procedures. Further, I want to remind all clubs and potential candidates of
Rotary International's strict policy against campaigning for the position of
District Governor.
