Howell Rotary News - 11-8-10

 

Honoring Our Veterans.   We're proud to honor our veterans as Monday's program.  Our speaker will be Carl Pardon, Livingston County Veteran Affairs Director, sharing information about services, programs and support initiatives for the men and women serving our country.  Rotarian Carol Griffith will be our host.

 

Festival of Trees.  We had several Rotarians step up to decorate a tree for the Howell Rotary for the Festivals of Trees at the City Park.  Thanks to this team we'll have great visibility to the hundreds of people driving through the park - thank you!

 

Helping Others.  

  • Peter Bowen shared that the Great Lakes National Cemetery is looking for support to purchase holiday wreaths for gravesites at the Holly, MI memorial.
  • We're remembering the family of Bill Klein by bringing personal care items, gift cards for area stores, or cash donations for the family to Monday's meeting.
  • Mike Yost is collecting donations for the Hidden Springs Thanksgiving Dinner program.  Food boxes are $30.

 

"12 Days of Gleaners" with WHMI / Howell Soft Cloth.  The Howell Rotary Club hasbeen asked to provide manpower on Saturday, November 13th to take food and monetary collections for Gleaners Food Bank.  Please let Sandie Cortez know when you're available to help that day.

 

Ringing the Bell for The Salvation Army - We're scheduled for Wednesday, December 1st to be ringing the bells at both doors of the Howell Wal-Mart store, starting at 10 a.m.  Steve Manor is leading the charge; please say yes and sign up for a 2-hour shift.

 

Membership Drive.  Our membership campaign has been extended through November.  Every time you bring a guest between now and then, you'll be entered into a drawing for a $150 VISA gift card.  If your guest joins, then you'll be in a drawing for another $50 VISA gift card.  Could be some serious holiday cash!  See Pat Convery for more information and for membership applications.

 

Looking Ahead at Upcoming Programs :  Carol Griffith will be presenting her annual 'Pulse of Livingston County's Real Estate Market' next week.a must attend!  Also, mark your calendars for December 20th for our annual Christmas program featuring the Howell High School Chorale. We'll meet at the Opera House for this special program.  Guests are invited, however, we'll need a head count a little closer to the date. 

 

Humor for the Week:  Shared by Bob Laura, recent speaker at Rotary: Outside England's Bristol Zoo there is a parking lot for 150 cars and 8 buses. For 25 years, its parking fees were managed by a very pleasant attendant. The fees for cars were (£1.40) and for buses about £7.00 ($2.25 and $11.22 USD).
 
Then, one day, after 25 solid years of never missing a day of work, he just didn't show up; so the zoo management called the city council and asked it to send them another parking agent.  
The council did some research and replied that the parking lot was the zoo's own responsibility. The zoo advised the council that the attendant was a city employee. The city council responded that the lot attendant had never been on the city payroll.
 
Meanwhile, sitting in his villa somewhere on the coast of Spain or France or Italy is a man who'd apparently had a ticket machine installed completely on his own and then had simply begun to show up every day, commencing to collect and keep the parking fees, estimated at about £560 per day -- for 25 years. Assuming 7 days a week, this amounts to just over £7 million pounds or approximately $11 million US dollars. and no one even knows his name.

Welcome Newest Member

Mike Witt- Mike and his wife Kim along with their children Mallory and Nolan are long time residents of Howell.  Mike is a STATE fan, he drinks neither Pepsi or Coke, and is not a bowler but I am sure could roll a ball if we needed.

 

Thank you Polly Mallory for sharing information on the Women's Resource Center.  The center helps at risk families with education.  They are currently adjusting to the times and giving the Center a new look.
