If you are out and about during the Fantasy of Lights Festivities this would be a great time to slip your Raffle Tickets, pen and change in your coat pocket and hit up friends and family to support Howell Rotary Better yet try to sell a few while visiting and celebrating Thanksgiving. Thank you for all doing your part and making the raffle a success!
Salvation Army Bell Ringing is set for Thursday, December 4, 2008 at both sets of doors at Walmart! Ron Hingst is in charge of securing volunteers. The sign up sheet will be passed around this week. Please sign up for a time block and make a difference in our community. The Howell High School Interact members will join us to assist us when school dismisses for the day!
American Red Cross Blood Drive: December 5, 2008, at the Tanger Outlet Center from noon to 6:00 p.m. in Space G-300 (between Haggar & Legg's Hanes Bali Playtex, just down from the Gap Outlet). Many of you signed up to donate blood in September when we had the Rotary Challenge and we appreciated your support. The Red Cross has asked that we host a second blood drive during the holiday season due to low blood supplies. A sign up sheet will be passed around and the next few meeting, another way to sign up is to call ADM, Victoria Redwine-Calvin at Tanger Outlet Center and reserve your one hour time block, 517-545-0500. Dear fellow Rotarians,
As a father of four and grandfather of five, I have been fortunate to have spent many years in the company of children. When raising our own children, my wife, Young, and I worked hard to give them what all children need most: a loving, safe, and stable home. Our children were our first priority, and we made sure that they always had nutritious food, appropriate clothing, quality medical care, and a good education. We knew very well how fortunate we were to be able to do this. We were grateful that we never had to say to our children, "I'm sorry, but there's nothing to eat tonight," or "I'm sorry, but we can't pay your school fees."
When I was a child, Korea was a poor country, and there were many children who went to bed hungry at night and had no school to go to in the morning. As a Rotarian, I know only too well that there are still far too many children in the world without the absolute essentials: food, clothing, shelter, medical care, and education. And as a Rotarian who is also a father, I consider all of the world's children to be my responsibility.
When I see my own grandchildren - happy, healthy, and enrolled in good schools - I cannot help but think of the millions of children who do not have so many advantages. I think of the children who have too little to eat and only dirty water to drink. I think of the children who are sick with diseases that could have been prevented and those who will have nowhere safe to sleep tonight. And I think of the children, millions of them every year, who won't live to see their fifth birthday.
December is Family Month. It is a time to focus on our families, to involve them in our Rotary service, and to challenge ourselves to do even more for those in need. Because there are so many families and so many children waiting for our help, we, as Rotarians, cannot look away. We cannot and will not rest until all children, everywhere, have the chance for a long and healthy life. We will not rest until we Make Dreams Real for every child in every home where there is hunger, sickness, and want. As Rotarians, we can do no less.

I have received the following updates for the first quarter of this Rotary year from RI General Secretary Ed Futa . These cover from--July 1 to September 30, 2008:
1. The Council on Legislation staff used several methods to remind District Governors and Council representatives of the December 3, 2008 deadline for submitting proposals to the 2010 Council, including mass e-mails, Websiteupdates and announcements in THE ROTARIAN.
2. Focus continued this quarter on growing existing programs in the US and Canada. Bank of America instituted a 1% cash back rewards program in Canada. Despite an overall slowdown in the economy, Rotary card programs performed well, and our card issuing partners report the performance of the Rotary card is among the best of their groups. This quarter, RI received a royalty payment of $550,000US from Bank of America for earnings on the US card program. Earned royalties contributing to the $100 Million Challenge now total more that $660,000US.
3. RI welcomed 90 new Interact Clubs in this first quarter and saw 78 new Rotary Community Corps register for a total of 11,695 and 6,435 members respectively. Also, RI admitted 80 new Rotary Clubs this quarter. As of June 30, 2008 membership numbers were 1,231, 483 members with 33,270 clubs ---this is a net increase of 7,315 Rotarians and 327 clubs.
