May 10th Bulletin

The Monday, May 10th meeting of the Howell Rotary will feature Dr. Alfred Stines (and possibly Dr. Michelle Stines) of the Stines Family Dental Center in Howell, who will share their first hand experiences in Haiti.

These two community minded citizens have been working in this poverty stricken country prior to last Fall's earthquake and now even more to help rebuild the communities after the natural disaster.

President Jeff Hansen has committed to a few minutes at the start of each meeting to "brainstorm" ideas to host a Tour de Livingston Kick Off event, so if you have an idea bring them or send them to Jeff.

Candy Jones-Guerin reported that Retreat Center has is competing for a $50 K Grant through the Pepsi Foundation, and everyone is welcome to go online and vote. The organization is committed to donating 5,500 lbs. of organic food to local food shelters.

Pat  Convery reported that the Howell Chamber has "No Smoking Signs" which businesses are required to post.

Hall of Fame Howell Rotarian Duane Zemp reported that last Monday's meeting coincided with the 65th anniversary when his military unit brought back prisoners and then President Harry Truman announced the end of World War II.

Candy Jones Guerin is organizing Howell Rotarians to volunteer their time for Baloonfest June 25-27 2010 Parking. Each hour volunteered brings in dollars to the Howell coffers so see Candy!

The May 3rd Meeting, thanks to Sam Vasiu, featured Rev. Sue Carter of the St. John Episcopal Church in Howell.  Rev. Carter, whose eclectic  background includes a variety of degrees in journalism, law and theology plus stints as a radio and TV reporter in Detroit, shared her adventures on an all women trip to the North Pole. If you would like to learn about this trip, Rev. Carter wrote a book called "Ordinary Women."

Finally, on the subject of Haiti, Howell Rotary Club Member Ron Hingst arranged for a donation of Tshirts, Racing Shirts, Ball Caps and Flip Flops from his client Racing for Kids to Karen Crouse, president elect of the HartlandRotary. The Hartland Rotary and the Clinton/Macomb Rotary collected 200 boxes of clothing and medical supplies which are being shipped to Haiti. Racing for Kids (www.racingforkids.org)  is a Grosse Pointe Farms, MI based non profit organization that uses the popularity of motorsports to visit sick kids at Children's Hospitals around the world.
